The Hidden Wolf; by Sue Brown—Blog Tour

Sue Brown returns today to talk about her love of shifter in connection with newest book, The Hidden Wolf.

Guest Post:

One of the first books I read in the M/M Romance genre was With Caution, J.L. Langley’s second book in the With or Without series. It sealed my love for MM shifter books. I fell in love with Remi and Jake, and Sterling (sweet heaven when is our Sterling getting his own story??) and all the other wonderful wolves and humans of her universe.

I have read many shifter books since. Kim Dare’s Pack series, Bailey Bradford’s Southwestern series, Amber Kell’s many shifter series to name but a few I’ve read and loved. I’m addicted to them. They all bring their own take on what is a well-trod genre. I couldn’t say it’s this book above all others. It’s this book in that series.

Recently I read Turnskin by Nicole Kimberling which is one of the most original and complex shifter books I’ve read in a long time. Her world is dark and political with many twists and turns in the story.

What I love most is that shifter means so much more than werewolf. There are as many variations as there are authors and each one is new and savoured – at least by this reader.

What is your favourite shifter book or series?

The long distance loving is hard on all three of them, Eli, Clarke and Clarke’s wolf, who is becoming more restless as Clarke refuses to shift. When Clarke going to give into the other side of him and how will Clarke and Eli resolve the distance between their lives?

Excerpt

Sheriff Milo Clarke leaned against the kitchen cabinets as he watched Eli Watkins and his team, the Calvary, remove the remains of Randy Streerson from the kitchen of Sapphire Ranch. He’d offered to help and been told firmly to stay the hell out of their way as they committed a felony.

Staying to one side was a damned sensible move. What used to be Randy Streerson, the head of a group of hunters that pursued and killed shifters, now covered the kitchen walls, floor, and dripped from the ceiling after young shifter Callum Pope shot him with one of the hunter’s bullets.

Cal was a distant shifter relative of Milo’s. His father had been related to Milo’s mother. Cal’s father and two elder brothers had been killed by a band of hunters led by the Streerson family. The pack had splintered in an effort to survive, and Cal had turned up on Sapphire Ranch after running hundreds of miles to get away from the hunters, only to discover the owner of the ranch was his mate. A lot had happened in a few days. Eli’s men took away what remained of the body and now they scrubbed the kitchen, surprisingly efficient. Milo didn’t have to be a cop to know this wasn’t the first time the Cavalry had cleaned away evidence that a murder had taken place.

He was stuck between duty and likely survival. On one hand he’d witnessed the struggle between Cal and Streerson for control of the gun before Cal had pulled the trigger. On the other…

How the hell would he explain to his deputies what had just taken place? They would want to know where he’d been hiding for the past few days, why he’d been lying to them, who the victim—who was no fucking victim—was, and what the hell was a shifter?

He was a shifter. At least a half-shifter. His mother had been a werewolf and Milo could change, he just chose not to. Instead he lived among the humans as a sheriff and hadn’t given in to that side of him for over five years except for one glorious moment a few days ago. Milo tried not to think about it even as his wolf grumbled inside.

Milo watched the team—at least he watched Eli. His whole attention was focused on the dark-haired man. Just watching him made his mouth dry and his dick hard. From the second Milo had shifted to prove the existence of werewolves to Eli and his assistant Ross, he’d realized that Eli was his mate.

Unable to resist, he’d trotted up to Eli and laid his head on his lap. Tentatively Eli had stroked his head, and Milo leaned into the caress, wanting Eli to touch him more. Eli filled his wolf senses. He smelled woodsy with a touch of citrus. He smelled good.

“Good doggy,” Eli had murmured.

Doggy? Milo gave a low growl at the insult, grinning in wolfy satisfaction as Eli snatched his hand back. He wouldn’t have hurt him—much.

And Eli had seemed equally drawn to him, finding it hard to take his eyes off Milo, even as they’d talked strategy with Joe, Cal’s mate and the owner of Sapphire Ranch.

But they hadn’t gone near each other, hadn’t touched each other at all beyond that one brief contact. Milo had been relieved because they had needed to focus their minds, not their dicks, to defeat the hunters. Relieved—and frustrated beyond belief to have his mate so close and not be able to touch him.

There was another issue. They hadn’t connected telepathically.

Milo had thought that happened immediately. But he was only a half-shifter, with limited shifter abilities in his human form, and Eli was a human. What would happen if they didn’t connect? Could they walk away from each other? It would make life so much simpler.

Milo caught Eli frowning at him, and he looked away, feeling guilty. Eli didn’t need to know. They hadn’t connected. He need never know. Milo’s wolf howled inside him at the thought of walking away from his mate, and for once Milo didn’t try to hush him. The thought hurt his human side just as much. But Milo had spent his whole life hiding his true nature, and now, through no fault of his own, everything he’d worked to hide was liable to be exposed. Among humans he hid the fact he was half-shifter. Around shifters he tried hard to fit in, even though his human side affected his wolf senses. And with both communities he hid the fact he was gay.

Milo had spent his whole life in hiding and with one phone call Joe had exposed him to humans—both as shifter and as gay. He wasn’t fucking ready for it. And didn’t that suck?

Cover Reveal: The Pinch of the Game; by Charley Descoteaux and Giveaway

Blurb:

Being a witch doesn’t mean one can beat the devil forever.

Jeffrey Overton, unemployed IT professional turned poker player, pushes his luck once too often and runs afoul of the host of an illegal card club. The man sent to escort Jeffrey to a “meeting” about his supernatural winning streak arrives at Jeffrey’s crappy North Portland apartment, lock-picking tools in hand and a charm to block Jeffrey’s magick.

Head muscle for said host, Mike Wells, is a Daisy from Daisyville. He isn’t a witch. What he lacks in magickal talent he makes up for in brawn, so he doesn’t expect the guy he’s after to overpower him. But once Mike renders Jeffrey helpless, he’d rather seduce him than bring him in.

Jeffrey and Michael ditch the “meeting” and end up hunting some of the same people they ran from, trying to get Jeffrey back into his own body. And that’s only part of the adventure. The pair travel halfway across the country on the quietest road trip in history and find missing people, empire-building witches, and maybe even the families they’d both thought lost to them.

Excerpt:

If Sal had sent someone after me, a short trip up to Seattle might be a good idea, maybe even BC. That called for some new clothes, so I grabbed my battered gym bag—my quick escape kit—and was almost home free when the kitchen door burst open. It would’ve been dumb to turn off the light when the goomba first went to work on the lock—I can’t see any better in the dark than your average Daisy, not when I’m blocked. Once that massive body filled the doorway, I wished I had. Wished I’d done something.

He hesitated, barely a moment, and I bolted for the front door. He grabbed me before I made it out of the kitchen and pinned both of my arms to my sides. It wouldn’t work, I knew that, but I still tried to burn his hands. All I needed was enough time to—fuck, is he laughing?

“Give it up, pretty boy. You’re blocked.”

The big man pushed me against the wall face-first and pulled both hands behind my back.

“Hey, wait a sec, big guy. Let’s talk about this. I can—”

He pushed me flat against the wall, and the rest of that sentence disappeared in the rush of air he squeezed from my lungs. I couldn’t help being turned on, even though pain and domination usually aren’t my thing. Neither are bears, but underneath the padding he felt nice and solid, leaning full against me. He tightened a plastic zip tie around my wrists with shaking hands. And then he held me there.

An Interview with Michaela Grey—Author of Coffee Cake: Blog Tour and Giveaway

BT Banner

I’m fortunate today to be hosting the kick off of Michaela Grey’s Coffee Cake blog tour. She’s agreed to answer some questions about herself and the book. She’s also got a giveaway so read through to the end to enter.

Welcome Michaela, please tell everyone a bit about yourself.
Hi there and thanks for having me! I’m a wife and mother in the Texas hill country. I’ve been writing for years but only got really serious about publishing about a year ago.

I know today isn’t your first ever release, but it is release day, how does that feel?

It feels amazing! This is my first “real” release – my only other book was self-published, so this is pretty darn exciting for me.

Take a few sentences and tell us about the new book, Coffee Cake. What inspired you to write this book?

I saw a writing prompt on Tumblr, actually. It was for an asexual Sam and a pansexual Gabriel (from the TV show Supernatural) and so I wrote it as fanfiction at first, but along the way, the characters grew and evolved from the way they are on the show and became Bran and Malachi.

The main character, Bran, is asexual. There aren’t a lot of books with asexual characters, what made you write about that?

That right there is the biggest reason. Asexuals fall in love just like “normal” people, and there are just so few books out there dealing with that. I wanted to show young ace folk that it’s perfectly possible to have a fulfilling relationship and be in love and that they’ll have to deal with all the stuff other people do, and that’s okay. Too many asexual teenagers these days grow up thinking they’re broken, and it’s my goal to help with that.

How hard was it to get the romance right between Bran and Malachi?

It really wasn’t hard at all. The only thing I had to really work on was making it clear that even though Bran doesn’t want sex for himself, he participates enthusiastically because he loves giving pleasure to Malachi and it delights him down to his toes to be able to take Malachi apart with his hands and mouth.

Can you talk about the other aspect of the story—the mystery of who’s after Malachi?

Well, it’s someone you meet fairly early on in the story. And I hope you won’t be able to guess who it is until the identity is revealed! You could say this person is sort of a ghost from Malachi’s past.

Tell us something not in the blurb.

Bran’s baking experiences come directly from my own kitchen, and if you find me on Tumblr and ask nicely, I’ll give you my secret recipe for the best bread you’ve ever tasted. (http://greymichaela.tumblr.com)

What do you like to read?

A little bit of everything. I love a good mystery, a good urban fantasy, like Jim Butcher, Neil Gaiman or Patricia Briggs. The only problem I have is that almost everything is so painfully straight. I want some diversity, please!

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

There’s a moment when you hit the sweet spot, where the words are backing up in your head and falling over themselves to get out on the page, and everything just flows. I love that bit. It’s what I aim for, and it doesn’t happen often, but when it does…

What’s your least favorite?

The days when I have to sweat and scratch and bleed for every sentence, if not every word. When I know I have to get it done anyway, but it just…won’t…happen. Those are the days when I wonder why I chose to be a writer in the first place. But then I’ll have a good day the next day and I’ll remember.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Well, I just finished my best work to date, I think. It’s called Buttons, and it tells the story of Micah the germaphobe who falls in love with Devon the mechanic. Micah has to work to overcome not only his neuroses but his deep-seated belief that he’s not good enough for Devon, and it’s a lovely story of character growth and transformation.

In the works right now is another mystery, because I am a glutton for punishment. A knitting pattern found on a murder victim is the only clue to a murder forty years in the making, and the detectives must work to decipher the pattern before the killer strikes again.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

Beauty Queens, by Libba Bray. It’s the telling of a group of beauty pageant contestants who crash-land on a deserted island, and how they must work together to survive. There’s so much to love about this book, and it basically turns the Lord of the Flies trope on its head.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Terry Pratchett, please.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

I love to knit while watching TV, and talk to my friends. I’m homebound due to poor health, so I don’t go many places, and my laptop is pretty much my life. J

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

Thank you for getting to know me a little better, dear readers! You can always talk to me on Tumblr or via my Facebook page, and I love hearing what you thought of the book, so please don’t hesitate to contact me and give me your feedback!

Blurb: Bran Kendrick never expected to fall in love. He’s asexual, after all. What chance does he have of finding someone who’ll see past that? So when Malachi Warren catches his eye, Bran tells himself his crush will pass. Malachi disagrees. He has been attracted to Bran for some time, something he is delighted to find Bran reciprocating. They begin to date and feel their way through an intimate relationship that meets both their needs.

When they escalate, Bran realizes someone is trying to take away the best thing that ever happened to him, and he must scramble to keep Malachi safe while they search for the would-be killer.

Excerpt

EVEN IN early September, Vermont meant that Saturday morning dawned crisp and cool, and Bran tugged on his favorite beanie and scarf before making the trek across campus to the Grind, the tiny coffee shop that was his main source of income.

He couldn’t help the smile that flickered across his face when he walked into the kitchen, breathing in the smells of bread, cinnamon, almonds, and toasted sugar. He could feel the tension draining from his shoulders as he mentally flipped through the list of things he needed to do before he opened the café.

Start the blueberry muffins first. They can bake while I put together the topping for the coffee cake. Sweet-talk the cappuccino maker into starting up and leave yet another note for Naomi about getting a new one. Put the croissants in the oven last; I really need to set aside a couple of days to perfect making those myself so I can actually recommend them with a clear conscience. Call Katie and find out where the hell she is and why I’m here alone again.

CoffeeCakeFSHe spent the morning making cappuccinos, espressos, and Americanos for the students who straggled in, bleary-eyed and hungover from the night before. He knew a lot of them—it wasn’t a large college, after all—and he dispensed smiles and the occasional aspirin along with the blueberry muffins and croissants.

When the bell jingled midmorning, Bran was in the back. He was handling the store alone, since Katie had phoned in sick.

“Be right there!” he called. He tugged a tray of muffin batter out of the massive refrigerator and slid it into the industrial-size oven before wiping his hands on his apron and hurrying back into the storefront.

Only to slam on the brakes and stare at Malachi leaning against the counter, smiling at him.

“Um,” Bran said eloquently.

“Couldn’t have said it better myself,” Malachi agreed. “What’s good this morning?”

Bran dragged his brain into gear. “The, uh, coffee cake is decent. I made it myself. Or the blueberry muffins. I don’t recommend the croissants—we don’t make them in-house.”

“Coffee cake sounds good, Bran! Can I have a hot chocolate with whipped cream and sprinkles with that, please?”

“Sure,” Bran said, and he moved to obey, mind whirling.

Malachi leaned on the counter and watched him, and Bran still couldn’t figure out what to say.

“Did you go to any good parties last night?” Malachi asked, and Bran jumped.

“I, uh, no,” Bran said, cursing his fumbling tongue. “Had to study. I don’t… party much.” And there goes any chance of Malachi wanting to get to know me, he thought a little despairingly.

“I know what you mean,” Malachi said, and Bran turned to stare at him, nearly dropping the coffee cake. Malachi lifted an eyebrow. “Oh, I party plenty, don’t get me wrong. But this English class is kicking my ass, and I can’t seem to get my head wrapped around it.”

“Do you have a study group?”

“I did,” Malachi said, popping a toothpick in his mouth. “But we went our separate ways at the end of last year, and I haven’t found anyone else to work with yet.”

“You should talk to Dave,” Bran said, and then he wanted to kick himself. Why hadn’t he volunteered himself? He could study with a senior, couldn’t he?

“Dave’s a great guy,” Malachi agreed, “but what about you?”

Bran did drop the coffee cake that time, and stood there staring at the mess on the floor for way too long. Idiot. He went to his knees and began picking up shards of pottery.

“You okay down there?” Malachi asked.

“Fine,” Bran said, and then he gasped as he sliced his hand on a sharp edge, blood welling up and then dripping onto the mangled coffee cake on the floor.

Malachi rounded the counter and pushed Bran away from the wreckage, gripping his wrist. “You idiot, what were you thinking?” His voice was warm with concern, and Bran couldn’t think of anything but how gentle Malachi’s hand was on his skin.

Malachi reached up, grabbed a clean towel from the counter, and wrapped it around Bran’s hand with deft movements. Then he stood up. “Stay there,” he told him, and disappeared.

Bran obeyed, resting his head against the cabinet. Dimly, he heard Malachi’s voice and the jingle of the coffee shop door. Silence fell.

That was that, then. Bran sighed. He was a klutz, and he’d scared off the cutest boy he’d ever seen by being a fumbling idiot who didn’t know how to talk to people like a normal person.

He nearly jumped out of his skin when Malachi appeared above him again.

“Whoa, hey, easy there!” Malachi said, grabbing his shoulder.

“I… thought you left,” Bran said, then wanted to kick himself.

“Nah, I closed the shop. Kicked out the few people savoring their muffins and locked the doors behind ’em. We’ve got the place to ourselves. Now get up, c’mon, we need to clean that wound and bandage it properly.” He steadied Bran by the arm as he levered himself to his feet, holding the red-soaked towel aloft with a grimace.

“Not feeling faint from blood loss, are you?” Malachi asked, steering him toward the back.

Bran shook his head. He was light-headed but it wasn’t blood loss. It was the firm hand that held his arm, steadying him as he led Bran to the bathroom, and the concern in those bright brown eyes.

Malachi opened the bathroom door and tugged Bran inside. It was a tiny room, and Bran held his breath at his proximity to the other young man. Malachi turned on the sink and unwrapped the towel with careful fingers. Bran hissed as it pulled at the edges of the gash, and Malachi winced.

“Sorry, kiddo,” he murmured. He dropped the bloody towel on the floor and held Bran’s hand under the running water, tightening his grip when Bran involuntarily pulled back at the stinging pain. “Gotta clean it out,” he reminded him. “Where’s your first-aid kit?”

“Under the sink,” Bran managed through his teeth.

Malachi fumbled for it one-handed, his soft hair brushing Bran’s arm as he bent down, and Bran swallowed hard.

Malachi came up triumphantly with the kit clutched in his fist and set it on the edge of the sink. After turning off the faucet, he gave Bran a gentle push toward the closed toilet lid.

“Sit. I’m gonna put my astounding first-aid skills to work here, and I don’t need you passing out halfway through. I need constant positive feedback or I shrivel up and die, you know.”

Bran huffed a laugh and sat down. “Are you a trained medical professional?” he teased, and Malachi grinned at him.

“Nah, I just play one on TV.” He examined the edges of the wound, tsking to himself. “The bleeding’s almost stopped, and I don’t think it’ll need stitches, but I can take you to the emergency room if you want?”

Bran’s head swam at the thought of having that long with Malachi, of being in a car with him, having his attention, but he shook his head regretfully.

“I can’t leave the store,” he said. “There’s muffins in the oven and, I have a lot more to bake, and Naomi would kill me if I took off now, especially since Katie’s not here to cover.”

“Sense of duty, huh?” Malachi said as he pressed gauze into place and began to wrap the wound. “I like that in a man.”

Bran blinked. Was Malachi… flirting with him? He fumbled for something to say, something witty, something that would make Malachi laugh, but then the moment passed, and Malachi was standing back to admire his handiwork.

“I can’t guarantee you’ll play the piano again,” he said, “But you’ll be able to impress all the girls with your wicked scar, so that’s something, right?”

“I’m not… interested in girls,” Bran mumbled, ducking his head.

There was silence from above him for a moment, and then Malachi laughed quietly. “Neither is my brother. Me, I figure the more the merrier.”

“What, like threesomes?” Bran said, then nearly clapped his hand over his mouth.

Malachi snorted. “No, I mean I don’t care what someone has down their pants. Attraction, for me, isn’t based on gender. But Tris is like you: he’s gay. Although he’s also the most socially awkward dude I’ve ever met, so if he ever gets a boyfriend, I may keel over in shock.”

“I’m not gay either,” Bran blurted. He wanted to run, to hide and never look at the young man standing in front of him, but at the same time a weird feeling of relief was stealing over him. Malachi was the first person he’d told. Come what may, he’d admitted to someone what he was, and that was a step forward, no matter how Malachi reacted.

Malachi was utterly still above him, and Bran swallowed hard. This was it, the part where Malachi told him to have a nice life and took off back to his normal friends.

Malachi tilted Bran’s chin up, and Bran’s eyes widened as he met his gaze.

“Nothing to be ashamed of, kiddo. So you’re ace?”

Bran nodded jerkily.

Malachi smiled at him. “Are you aromantic too?”

“I, uh….” Bran floundered for words.

“Haven’t gotten that far in your research yet?” Malachi winked at him. “Look it up. We can talk about it when we get together to study tomorrow.”

Bran stared at him. When had they agreed to that?

“In the meantime, you have a coffee shop to run, so let’s get you back to it, shall we?” He flapped his hands at him until Bran took the hint and stood up, feeling a mile tall as he towered over the shorter man. Malachi just tilted his head back and grinned up at him. Then he shooed him out of the bathroom and back into the store, where he grabbed a chair from the dining area and dragged it behind the counter.

“Sit,” he said firmly, and he cocked an eyebrow when Bran hesitated. “You can’t serve food with an open wound, kiddo. So you’re going to direct me and work the register, and I’m gonna run this place for you.”

Bran just stared at him as Malachi grabbed the dustpan and began cleaning up the coffee cake mess on the floor.

Malachi whistled as he cleaned and then opened the front door, and Bran stayed quiet and watched him, head swimming.

Malachi hadn’t run. He hadn’t disappeared when Bran had told him what he was. Why not? Bran was different, not normal. Malachi couldn’t possibly be interested in Bran, so why was he still hanging around?

Malachi snapped his fingers, and Bran blinked, looking up.

“You’ve got a customer, kid, and the oven just dinged at me. Either it’s flirting with me, or the muffins inside are done. Could go either way. What do you want me to do?”

Bran gathered his thoughts. “Um, get the muffins out, put the tray on the cooling rack back there, and set the timer for five minutes. Then you’ll take them out of the tray, but they need to set up a bit before you do that or they’ll collapse.”

Malachi winked. “You got it.”

He disappeared, and Bran stood up to take the first customer’s order with a smile on his face.

I have a horrible time when it comes to writing about myself.  It is not that I have low self-esteem, but the fact that I am not comfortable talking about myself.

For most of my life, I have been writing and sharing it with my friends.  They have repeatedly told me I needed to publish my writing and share it with the world. Now that I have, I am amazed at how many people admire it.

My interests beyond writing include reading a variety of books, watching movies and drawing.

I truly appreciate all the support and encouragement from my friends, family, and you. I am so thankful to your support!

Keep on reading! I am always interested in hearing about what people are reading, especially if it is something I have written.

Thank you for reading and letting me know what you think of my writing!

About the Book

Title: Family Jewels

Author: M.J. O’Shea

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Cover Artist: L.C. Chase

Length: 200 Pages

Release Date: 27th April, 2015

Blurb:

FamilyJewelsLGCorbin Ford, aka the Nightwatchman, named for the antique pocket watches he leaves behind at jobs, has been in the cat-burgling business for years. His father was. His grandfather was. His mother is still one of the most renowned thieves. Corbin likes his high-profile heists, priceless paintings from private collections, artifacts from museums, but his favorite? Jewels. Sparkly, beautiful jewels. If they’re famous, better yet.

Interpol agent Luke Eldridge has one goal and one goal only: to catch the Nightwatchman. Luke’s been after him for months, but getting the slip time and again is getting embarrassing. Luke has never even laid eyes on the bastard, but he’d happily strangle him. And then arrest him.

When Luke meets Corbin, the man of his dreams, he falls hard and fast… only to catch Corbin red-handed with his hand in a jewelry case at the scene of the highest-profile murder that’s rocked the international world in years.

Excerpt

It was still beautiful outside by the time they’d wandered through the market and back to Luke’s building, ice creams in hand. The evening was getting chilly, though, and Corbin had goose bumps up and down his arms. It wasn’t time to go inside yet. Corbin had already wasted a lot of this perfect day sleeping. He wasn’t ready to give it up. He huddled closer to Luke, who threw his free arm over Corbin’s shoulders.

“Freezing?”

“Yeah. I guess it’s not quite short-sleeve weather yet.”

Luke chuckled. “England newbie. Give it another month and even the nights will be warm.”

He squeezed Corbin closer and rubbed his chilled arm. Corbin had to admit it was nice. He’d been admitting a lot of things were nice lately. He tried to imagine his mother’s voice, when she found out he was actually dating someone. Someone with a regular job. Someone who handled money and probably would not have the most favorable opinion of Corbin’s line of work. That little scene in his head took away a bit of the romance of his whirlwind… whatever they were doing, with Luke and life so he pushed it away.

The lights of the market, and the music coming from the Chinese food stall belting out Mariah and Britney brought him back to Luke and how happy he was walking along being a normal guy. It had been hours since he’d thought of his next shiny conquest, which in itself was highly unusual. It was like he’d replaced his first and most familiar drug with another, one that was far more addictive and dangerous. Corbin didn’t want to think of the possible consequences. He told himself not to go crazy trying to figure out what could happen in the future. It wouldn’t do any good.

“You want to finish these on those benches? Then we can go upstairs?” he asked, gesturing toward his ice cream.

The sun had mostly sunk below the buildings, and the earlier warmth was long gone. He was freezing his nutsack off, but he didn’t want to let go of the night. He liked being out in public with Luke, not one of the shadows or a spider scuttling around the corner. He liked the fleeting feeling of being a real person. Someone who lived in the sunlight.

“Sure. You going to be too cold?” Luke asked.

“I’ll be fine.

“Here. I’m fine. Wear my jacket.”

Corbin accepted Luke’s jacket with a smile and a nod. Then he bumped shoulders with him and cuddled closer to watch the water and the people, and listen to the off-key pop music from the corner stall. It was really, really good. Better than he thought he could have and nothing he thought he’d ever want. Corbin took a big bite out of his raspberry cheesecake ice cream.

“You’re a biter. I don’t know if this little thing we have can continue.” Luke teased.

“Please. You love it when I bite,” Corbin said. He elbowed Luke lightly.

“That was corny.”

“And your joke wasn’t?”

“Guilty.” Luke sat there silently for a few moments. “Okay, this is probably going to be a whole new level of corny, but I’m going to say it anyway.”

“What?” Corbin’s pulse sped up a bit, happy and trippy and ready to bump its way right out of his neck.

“I’ve been having a great time getting to know you.”

Luke sounded fumbling and sweet. It was such a one-eighty from the dark, rough, suave guy from the first night at the club, the confident well-off man he’d come to know. Corbin liked all the sides of him. The one who was weathered and savvy and used to society, and now this one, who didn’t have much experience or skill with dating. He wanted to know more about all of them.

“Me too. I can’t believe how fast the month has flown by.”

“That’s kind of what I was thinking. So….” Luke blushed under his golden skin.

Corbin thought he was unbelievably adorable. He couldn’t help curling his free hand around Luke’s thigh. “What were you thinking?”

“If we made this a little more… official maybe? I don’t really do dating. You know that. Not before, anyway. But I seem to be breaking all my rules for you.”

Corbin wanted to smile and run and laugh and scream all at the same time. Instead he gave Luke’s thigh a squeeze. “Yeah. I’ve been doing my share of rule-breaking too.”

“Is that a yes?”

“I think so. Does that mean you’re my….” Corbin wasn’t sure he could say the word.

“Boyfriend?” Luke snorted. “God, I feel like a tenth grader.”

“Hey, I kinda like that word. Never said it before, at least not about myself, but I think I like it.”

“Yeah. Me too. And same. Well, not for years anyway. I tried that back in school, but it was pretty much a disaster.”

“That’s not very optimistic.” Corbin chuckled. He didn’t really mean it. He had a good feeling about him and Luke. Sure, it was probably going to end with him disappearing into the night sometime in the near future, but he really fucking liked the way he felt when he was with him. He liked the glances they got from people, fond and happy, like they were looking at new love.

“I didn’t mean you,” Luke said with his soft laugh. “You’re not a disaster at all.”

About the Author

Author PicI’m Mj O’Shea 🙂 I grew up, and still live, in sunny Washington state and while I love to visit other places, I can’t imagine calling anywhere else home.

I spent my childhood writing stories. Sometime in my early teens, the stories turned to romance. Most of those were about me, my friends, and our favorite movie and pop stars. Hopefully, I’ve come a long way since then.

When I’m not writing, I love to play the piano, dance, cook, paint pictures, and of course read! I like sparkly girly girl things, own at least twenty different colored headbands, and I have two little dogs who sit with me when I write. Sometimes they comes up with ideas for me too…when they’re not busy napping.

Blood and Ghosts; by Shira Anthony – Guest Interview and Giveaway

Please welcome back Shira Anthony who is here today to talk about her newest release, Blood and Ghosts. Make sure to read through to the end to check out the very cool giveaway Shira is doing.

Welcome back Shira, since you’ve been a guest before, how about just a brief reminder about yourself?

Thanks for having my again, Andrew! So the quick down and dirty about me… I’m a former opera singer, an attorney, and I write gay romances. I’ve written stories about musicians, lawyers, mermen, and vampires.

So let’s jump right in, you’re really moving away from your ‘comfort’ zone lately. First Mermen, now Vampires. Talk about that dynamic a bit.

I love writing contemporary romance, but I’ve loved reading fantasy and sci fi since I was a kid, so I think the progression to stepping out of the comfort zone of “what I know” (musicians) into my imagination was a natural one. Maybe out of my comfort zone is becoming my comfort zone?

But seriously, writing in a universe readers are familiar with (contemporary) is a great place to start before tackling the more challenging fantasy world building. I had written enough contemporary books that I felt more confident writing a universe from the ground up. But it’s still a huge challenge, and I couldn’t do it without my beta readers and my fabulous editor.

The Blood series, can you give us an overview of the series as a whole?

BloodandRainFSThree books in total: Blood and Rain, Blood and Ghosts, and Blood and Eternity. The vampires are not so much demonic, but a different species from humans. They can breed with humans, and they can also create vampires in the more traditional style from human beings. Their society has a hierarchy, with those born vampires (“ancient vampires”) as the equivalent of royalty. The ancients take care of other vampires and they entered into a true with the vampire hunters that the hunters may execute vampires who murder humans.

The plot begins in the late 1800s in France, and extends to 2015 in the United States. It follows the two main characters, Nicolas Lambert, an ancient vampire, and Adrien Gilbert, a vampire hunter. Adrien falls for Nicolas in spite of his hatred of the creatures who killed his mother when he was a young boy. Adrien becomes immortal through Nicolas’s blood, although Adrien does not become a vampire. Adrien and Nicolas are separated, and Adrien vows to find Nicolas.

The story features three pairings, and never fear, all will get their HEAs (I’m a sucker for a happy ending!). But before they get their HEA, Nicolas and Adrien will struggle and suffer as they try to prevent a war between hunters and vampires.

Shifting to Blood and Ghosts, how does that move the series along?

SmBloodandGhostsFSBlood and Ghosts is a bridge between books, in some sense, in that it features the manifestation of Adrien’s power as an immortal hunter: he can control time. Blood and Ghosts answers many questions, but although the book ends with a happily for now, there is still a great deal that needs to be resolved before the two men can by happy.

How much research did you do to write this type of novel?

I researched French history from the late 1800s and incorporated that into the books. France was much like England in Victorian times. A society on the verge of the modern era, but with one foot still firmly planted in the past, with its conventions and customs.

IntoWindWhat part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

The ending was the most fun to write, because I was able to reunite the two main characters after a great deal of grief. It’s romantic, and it’s poignant, because it leaves Adrien with a choice to make (I won’t spoil that). I love writing angsty scenes!

What part made you struggle them most?

The time travel. Hands down. I rewrote the time travel bits a half a dozen times, and kept tweaking with my betas and editors so it makes logical sense. There are still a few anachronisms left unexplained, but they are intentional, and will be resolved in the last book in the series. Seriously, time travel makes my head spin!

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

Adrien’s power comes with his own personal demon, of sorts. For those of you who know Star Trek, think good Kirk/evil Kirk. Adrien’s demon is his baser nature. He must learn to control the demon to control his power, and if he fails, he will die. The struggle isn’t at all over at the end of Blood and Ghosts, but the stage is set for it.

BloodandGhosts_headerbannerWhere is the series going from here?

The last book will probably be released in the first half of 2016. And while I have an idea for a spinoff series for my Mermen of Ea books, this series will end with the Blood and Eternity.

StealingTheWindFSWhat have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

Wow! Tough question. I haven’t had a lot of time to read lately. I have read a few graphic novels (Japanese manga) to cleanse my writing palate, though. There’s a fabulous series called Tokyo Ghoul I’m pretty much hooked on. It’s pretty violent and gruesome, but the plot and the art are gripping. I’m also completely in love with the Attack on Titan series. Similar, paranormal/fantasy manga from Japan. I’m a very visual person, so reading the graphic novels inspires me with my own writing.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

The last book in the Mermen of Ea Series, Running with the Wind, comes out on June 8th! I’m so excited about that, although I’m going to miss some of those characters. Some I’ll reconnect with in a planned spinoff series featuring 2 secondary characters, though, so readers will have a chance to revisit all of the series characters, if only in cameo.

Even better? I’ve got a fabulous map of the Ea universe that will be part of the book! I’ll be sharing that when it’s closer to release time, but it is so cool – I can’t thank the Dreamspinner folks enough for indulging me!

Thanks, Andrew, for hosting me today! -Shira

A Hard Man is Good to Find; by Kiernan Kelly—Book Blast and Giveaway

Blurb:

When RJ meets Chaos, a private party stripper, it’s gloves (and everything else) off as they butt heads and other body parts on their way to becoming more than just a one-night stand.

Publisher: Torquere Press

Cover Artist: BS Clay

ahardmanisgoodtofind1400

Excerpt:

The doorbell rang, nearly unheard over the music and laughter in the living room. RJ knew who it was; his gift to his sister had arrived. He made his way to the door to let the stripper inside.

Over six feet of brawny muscle straining at the seams of a tight pseudo-cop uniform waited on the other side of the screen door. Mirrored sunglasses hid his eyes, but not the sharp line of his jaw or the sexy scruff dusting his cheeks.

For the first time in his life, RJ was struck dumb. He stared at the man, letting his eyes travel slowly over the wide chest, narrow waist, and long, long legs. There was a bulge just below the buckle of the black leather belt that was worthy of some very deep contemplation.

The man’s voice was as sensuous as liquid velvet. “I’m from Strip-O-Grams. I’m here for Paula’s bachelorette party. Is this the right address?” The man cocked one sleek eyebrow, then used one finger to slide his sunglasses down a bit. He peered at RJ from over the rims. Dark brown. His eyes were dark brown, deep and liquid.

RJ’s face went red and his mouth dry. He was embarrassed to be caught ogling the man like an all-you-could-eat-buffet, and even more to his chagrin, his dick wasn’t embarrassed about it at all. It filled, pressing against the thin material of his slacks. Unless he cupped himself, there was no way to hide his erection.

The stripper noticed, and a brief flicker of heat scalded his gaze which only made RJ’s problem worse.

The man’s voice was sensual and deep, almost sex for the ears, and RJ’s cock heard it loud and clear. “Uh, yeah. This is it. I’m Paula’s brother, RJ.”

“Officer Chaos.”

Chaos is a perfect name, my man, because you are wreaking havoc with my self-control right now. I want to climb you like a ladder, rung by perfect rung, RJ thought, chewing on the inside of his cheek. He’d asked for a stripper dressed as a cop — a little private dig at Steven’s position on the city council — but he’d never envisioned how drop-dead sexy the costume would be, or the man who filled it so admirably.

An Interview With Alina Popescu – Author of Craving Stains: Blog Tour and Giveaway

stains-tour-fb

Welcome Alina, nice to finally be the one interviewing you. Tell everyone a bit about yourself.

Hi Andy, thanks for having me here! It’s a pleasure to chat with you under any circumstances.

Let’s see… I am Romanian, born and raised here. I am addicted to coffee and the Internet. I love to travel and I love dogs. I’ve been writing all my life, my first attempt at a novel happened when I was about ten. I am a bit of a geek… Okay, a lot of a geek, and I’ve always been a bit of a tomboy. Always reading what the boys read, which I guess it’s why I’d got so into science fiction, adventures, mysteries, and fantasy.

Craving Stains is your newest release, talk about this for a bit.

Craving Stains has been quite a journey for me. Deciding to write it led to amazing things, but more importantly, amazing people. It started out as a short story for the Stranded anthology and then I worked on expanding it. It went from about 7,000 words to a little over 15,000 and that helped me explore Wynn’s world more, as well as his mother’s background.

Craving Stains is a story about being safe and protected, but having no freedom or control over your own life. Although Wynn’s case is extreme, all of us experience that sense of being stuck and having no say on what will happen next. I think that’s one of the reasons people find it easy to relate to Wynn’s emotional turmoil.

Can you tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

I can tell you that in the future, the mere mention of the IRS (in its new form) still terrifies everyone. They are incredibly powerful and they don’t joke around. Apparently, even if we get better at evading death, we have no such luck with taxes.

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

The meetings between Wynn and Doyle were the most fun to write. The black-white play, the fact that they are complete opposites, yet form a perfect unit, that made those encounters quite enjoyable for me. Neither of them has the slightest clue about what’s happening to them, yet they go along with it. The thought of challenging it, of stopping, never occurs to them.

What part made you struggle them most?

The final part. It wasn’t really a struggle (thank heavens for tight deadlines), but it was difficult for me to write. I have decided quite early on that I don’t know what happens with Wynn in the end. So I wrote it like that. I get very attached to my characters, so knowing both possibilities of my ending hurt and made me want to pull Wynn into my arms and snuggle him. The thing that helped me go through with it was the fact that, regardless of what each reader chooses as their ending, given Wynn’s circumstances, it still is a happy ending.

What else have you written?

I have released a few stories before Craving Stains. I started with two free fantasy short stories which were meant to get my name out there. One was MF, the other one was MM, both in the same Lost Angels series—Pure Love of the Fallen and Flawless Design. My debut novel was released in April 2014 and it was the first book in a vampire trilogy. The Edge of Hope has been my first real taste of publishing something and it’s been great. About six months later, the anthology version of Craving Stains was released and was soon followed by more gay romance / gay fiction works.

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

I don’t really have a favorite part, but that moment when a story comes to life, triggered by a flicker of inspiration, I adore that.

What’s your least favorite?

Titles and blurbs. Titles more than blurbs as sometimes it takes me a really, really long time to come up with a good one. It’s either a quick process, or I struggle for years. Nope, I am not exaggerating here, The Edge of Hope took me almost three years to come up with.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Right now I am in the middle of edits for Strength to Leg Go, a werewolf gay romance that will launch the Tales of the Werewolf Tribes series. It will be published in early July, right on time for Euro Pride Con in Munich. I am also working on two other series, both gay romances, Famous on the Internet and Warriors of Vis, and a standalone dark science fiction novella called Angel’s Feather. With a bit of luck, you’ll see them all released in 2015.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

I’ve mostly read books that I wanted to review, so as they currently are or have recently been on tour, they have been in the spotlight. I am currently reading two science fiction books, Appearances by TM Smith and The Luxorian Fugitive by Mann Ramblings. I think readers in general should get out of their comfort zones a bit more. We tend to stick to a small niche within a certain genre and miss out on a whole world of amazing stories. I try to push myself to read in all genres, and I think others should do that too.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Oh, that’s an easy question. Mihai Eminescu. He’s arguably the greatest poet in Romanian literature, although he’s written prose as well. To understand why, think of a manlier, darker, more brooding version of a genius such as Sheldon Cooper from Big Bang Theory. Only Eminescy was really good at getting women to fall at his feet. I think I would have been his biggest fangirl if I were born in the same period as him. It would have required me to invent fangirling, but I thing I could have pulled it off.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

I love going to the movies and I love traveling. I am pretty outdoorsy, so a quick trip to the mountains is always a great idea. I used to have a lot more hobbies, but unfortunately, I rarely have time for more than the occasional outing with my friends and one or two road trips abroad every year. I usually tend to combine those with work anyway.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

I think the one thing I feel I haven’t said enough is how grateful I am for every reader who’s picked up one of my stories. I feel particularly happy when they happen to enjoy what I’ve written, but I am still thankful for every reader who decides to invest time and money in my books.

Thanks for having me here today, Andrew. It’s been great fun answering your questions!

Blurb:

Wynn Brenwood has been trapped by his mother since birth, shut away in a sterile, hospital-like apartment.  Is it her desire to keep him safe that sees him locked up in his pristine cage? Or are her motives less innocent and well-intentioned?

Wynn longs to break free to experience the world he sees beyond his window. Desperate to escape, he meets Doyle, a handsome, leather-clad, and enigmatic stranger. But is Doyle real, or is he just a figment of Wynn’s imagination?

Book Trailer

Excerpt:

WYNN woke up with a start, splayed on his living room floor, gulping for air and feeling hot, sticky fluid all over his boxer briefs. “God damn it! If felt so real,” he yelled, a fresh wave of tears washing his face. He dragged himself to the bathroom and shed all his clothes.

Before throwing it into the laundry bin, he smelled his T-shirt. It held a trace of spicy cologne and male. Wynn’s hand flew to his mouth, covering the gasp. No, it was impossible, his brain was just making up scents that weren’t there. He threw it away with a huff, removed his now very sticky boxers, and went into the shower room, turning on the water and all the cleansing agents his mother insisted were added to the mix.

He massaged his body carefully, relaxing his muscles, tight and a little sore from sleeping on the floor. Every touch seemed to bring his body to life, more than ever before. Within minutes, he was panting, hard as a rock, and clear fluid dripped from the tip of his cock. He closed his fingers around the base of his shaft and started stroking lightly, tip to bottom and back again, just how he liked it.

“Doctor Miller is here for an unscheduled medical visit,” the central computerized system announced, the metallic voice making Wynn jump. He groaned, pushing down his frustration and turning the water to ice cold. He rushed through the rest of his shower and dried off quickly, walking into his bedroom to put on a pair of white sweats and a loose hoodie of the same color.

“What are you doing here, Doctor?” he asked in a sharp tone, not bothering with any niceties. “You shouldn’t be here for a few more days.”

The good doctor gave him an understanding smile and a nod, getting right on Wynn’s nerves. “Your mother ordered an emergency checkup. I hear you were not feeling well yesterday,” he explained in a honeyed voice, smiling as he took out scanners and other gadgets from his bag.

“I was angry she broke her promise again. I am perfectly healthy, and you should just pack your bag and get out,” Wynn said in an even voice, plopping down on a chair and eyeing the doctor with murderous intent.

“Your mother decides these things, not I.” The doctor shrugged and continued to arrange everything. Wynn stood as non-threateningly as he could, walked to the coffee table now filled with medical instruments, picked up a scanner, and threw it. He laughed as he watched it break into dozens of pieces against the thick glass of his window wall. The light buzzing of the maid bot hover propulsion was the only sound in the suddenly quiet room. Maud cleaned everything quickly and retreated to the kitchen.

“Doctor, unless you want me to break your stuff, all of it, and then punch you in the face, I suggest you pack up your bag and get out of my house.” Wynn turned swiftly and walked back into his room, giving the door a strong push to make sure it was loud when it closed behind him. He leaned against it, sticking his ear to the wood, listening for the sounds in the living room. Without a word, the doctor did as instructed.

Dating for Deafies; by Nikka Michaels

Nikka Michaels is stopping by today with her latest short story, Dating for Deafies. I had the chance to read this as past of the Stranded Anthology from Wayward Ink Publishing, and it was one of my favorites in the anthology.  So take a moment, read up a bit and go buy the book—at $1.99, you really can’t go wrong.

Blurb:

datingfordeafies_1000x1595*Originally appeared in Stranded anthology.

If Evan York keeps hiding from the world behind his laptop he might miss out on something special.

Will he find the courage to try something new?

EXCERPT:

Evan’s phone vibrated insistently in his pocket. He silenced it as he walked down the short hallway. When his eye caught the flash of movement on a collision course, he braced his body for impact. Six feet plus of male sent Evan stumbling a step backward as a low breath left his lips. Strong hands steadied him as Evan gripped the man’s leanly muscled forearms.

Evan sucked in a lungful of the delicious scent of coffee, spicy aftershave or cologne, and something masculine. The worried face of Tristan Gaines stared at him, and Evan felt his face flush. After feeling Tristan’s hard body pressed against his, he wanted more than just teasing emails. He wanted to taste how Tristan’s mouth and coffee blended together on his tongue. He wanted to watch those green eyes darken with lust. He wanted to feel the vibration of the man’s moans under his hand as he kissed down his stomach. He wanted Tristan.

An Interview with Tali Spencer

Tali Spencer

It’s been a few weeks since I had my last Tuesday Interview, but what better way to restart than with one of my favorite authors, Tali Spencer. Talk is one of my ‘go to people’ when I have questions about writing, publishing, and fantasy. She’s a multi-published award winning author and if you’ve not read her books, you really need to find out what you’re missing.

Welcome back Tali. Since it’s been a while, why don’t you tell everyone a bit about yourself.

IMG_0368I think I’m a pretty ordinary human being. No one would pick me out in a crowd. I enjoy the usual things: good food, good books, spending time with friends and family. But I’m also introspective and kind of solitary, I like my alone time. What I never am, though, is bored. Never. I think that’s because for my entire life I’ve carried around all these other worlds and people and stories inside my head. Continue reading An Interview with Tali Spencer
