Hostage Blog Tour—An Interview With Cheryl Headford & Giveaway

When I heard that Cheryl had rewritten Hostage and it was being published by Harmony Ink, I was doing a great big happy dance. If you’ve never read any of her books, you really should. I’ve been a fan since I read the original Hostage on the Gay Author’s website. (That version is long gone.) But I was thrilled to be able to host Cheryl for the start of her blog tour.

An Interview with Cheryl Headford

Welcome back Cheryl! Since it’s has been a while since you’ve been here, remind people about who you are and what your write.

I’m a seriously crazy vampire goddess, doing her best to bring up her disabled son on her own while subjected to the pitiless rule of three cats and a dopey dog.

I’m also a writer of gay books. My alter ego Nephy Hart writes books for grown ups while I write for not quite grown ups.

We first met on the Gay Authors website. How has GA affected your writing career?

GA is directly responsible for my writing career. Without GA and the wonderful people I met there, including you, I would never have had the confidence to submit a work for publication. Therefore everything that’s happened since GA was your fault.

I’ve read most of your books, before we talk Hostage, tell us about some of your other works.

Where do I start? Everyone knows my favourite is Enigma, because I’m so totally in love with the MC Silver. Unfortunately that one’s down at the moment for polishing although it will be back on sale with a brand new cover very soon.

After Enigma, though, I think my favourites are The Runaway, which is a Nephylim adult book, The Face in the Window, which is my Young Adult, and Ari which is my most recent release, which is NA.

The three books couldn’t be more different.

The Runaway is about a young man called Jack, who is living with his aunt in a cabin by the wood recovering from a car accident in which he lost his memory and his parents. He meets the enigmatic Cierrai on the banks of the lake. Cierrai confuses Jack. He’s so androgynous that Jack has trouble remembering he’s a man sometimes. That’s why he’s so attracted to him, especially when he’s wearing those suspenders and that little leather skirt.

As they grow closer Jack’s memories return and he realized it’s not Ciarrai’s feminine side that attracts him and they embark on a passionate affair. But Ciarria’s hiding a secret and when his past catches up with him Jack has to fight through an overwhelming sense of betrayal to find Ciarrai and hold on to him.

The Face in the Window is a YA about a young man called Haze who is struggling with a terrible thing that happened in his past. He thinks he’s put it all behind him, but then he meets Ace, a stunning blind, albino boy whose family vary from over protective to downright abusive.

As they grow closer and Haze comes to realize what a truly remarkable boy Ace really is, the abuse he suffers at the hands of his brother enrages Haze and brings the irrational, uncontrollable rage he experienced after the trauma of his past to the surface and when he accidentally hurts Ace he runs away from everything.

Fortunately, he can’t run away from Ace, who might be blind but is certainly not stupid or un–resourceful. With Ace at his side, Haze faces up to what happening in the past and is able to move on with a better insight and a beautiful new boyfriend to remind him every day of how precious life is and how much someone can achieve be with the right person at his side

As for Ari, I’ll speak more about him later.

Some of your work is YA/NA, other stories are very much adult. How do you keep the voices of the characters age appropriate?

That’s why I have two personas. Nephy Hart lets it all out and her characters do whatever the hell they want.

Cheryl has to rein hers in a lot more. As any parent will know, teenagers are horny little bastards. All they think about is sex and I have to keep diverting them. Having a fourteen year old son doesn’t really help because he wants sex as much as the characters do. He tells everyone I write gay porn and wants all the gory details. Even when my characters stop he fills in the details to the point I have to hit him with a cushion to shut him up.

He is useful with ‘voice’ though. He corrects dialogue with, ‘no way would a kid say that’, or ‘Mam, that’s really lame’, and gives me his unique perspective – when he can be arsed.

One of your most recent releases – Ari – has a transgendered main character. Talk about that character and the book itself.

Ari is NA. It begins at a writers meet where two young men, Ari and Benji meet and experience an immediate attraction. All is not quite as it seems though. Although Benji makes no secret of the fact he’s transgender, Ari is not quite as forthcoming about the fact he’s intersex.

Right from the start, they experience bumps in the road, and they only get worse when they go home.

Benji meets Ari’s family, two strong and determined pagan women and is introduced to Ari’s wonderfully supportive home environment, being included in their celebration at the tiny stone circle and experiencing the beginnings of the healing that repairs his own family relationships.

When Ari is seriously injured in an accident that might not have been an accident, Benji rushes to his side and both families struggle with the possibility of a future without Ari, or with an Ari so changed he might as well be a different person.

The story is about labels, about two young men fighting to be recognized as who and what they are, and about a love that can transcend everything and keep you going even when the odds seem hopeless

Wayward Ink

Let’s talk Hostage. What is this about?

Hostage is about two princes who go on a grand adventure. At the beginning Astrin Raphael is the hostage of House Gabriel, at a time when the two Houses of Raphael and Gabriel have been at war for almost 20 years. His freedom is the price of peace.

Rowan Gabriel hates him for the death of his parents in a Raphael raid fifteen years ago. The hatred makes him treat Astrin very badly to begin with.

When Astrin’s father and Rowan’s uncle are kidnapped they work together on a reckless, insane adventure into the heart of enemy territory to rescue them. Along the way Rowan’s hatred gives way to an altogether different feeling that it takes him some time to recognize. It takes Astrin a lot longer and by the time he realizes how he feels for Rowan it’s almost too late.

I love that the “Great Houses” are all named after archangels even though this is not set on Earth. Where did you get the inspiration for this story?

I have absolutely no idea! I set out wanting to write something a bit different. It was to be an adventure for teenagers, and that’s all I knew. The spark of inspiration came from a dream, pretty much the same one Rowan was plagued with, although it was nothing like as traumatic for me. It was vivid though. The editor commented that the description was a little too clear; too graphic, but I wrote what I saw, and fortunately she kept it in as it was.

Is the setting somewhere other than Earth? Maybe. It could also be Earth sometime in the future. It was definitely grounded very much in Earthlike landscapes and peoples. In some ways the things the boys get up to are very ordinary; camping out in the back of a car, riding a crowded, dirty train, getting drunk in a dive and staggering back to the pub where they’re staying and waking the landlady.

The descriptions of scenery and settings are all based on photographs or personal knowledge of real places, so I don’t know. Maybe it was Earth, maybe just somewhere which evolved a little different. Angels get everywhere, you know.

Introduce us to your main characters, Rowan and Astrin.

Rowan and Astrin are crown princes of Houses Gabriel and Raphael, two of the four ruling Houses of the world in which the story is set. House Gabriel is in the north and House Raphael in the West. The other two Houses are House Michael in the South and House Uriel in the East.

Rowan is nineteen years old. He’s tall, dark and brooding with an impulsive streak and a fiery temper and an inability to let go of anger. He hates Astrin for the death of his parents in a House Raphael raid gone wrong, even though Astrin was a baby at the time.

Astrin is seventeen and couldn’t be more different. He’s slender and fair with pale blonde hair and green eyes. He seems fragile but most certainly isn’t and proves to be by far the most resourceful of the two on their journey. He’s stable, level headed and worldly wise, and he gets them out of trouble over and over again.

I read the original version (and this one too now). What’s different about this version?

It’s much better edited and has been made safer for younger audiences (ie I’ve nixed the sex) It was probably more interesting before, but it’s much smoother and cleaner (in many senses of the word) now.

Will there be more adventures in this world and/or with these characters?

Nope. I very rarely write sequels and this story is complete. I have too many other things going on to come back to this one. Although, I have learned never to say never.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

Astrin and Rowan can communicate telepathically. Rowan’s mind looks like a blazing sun while Astrin’s is a spun silver web dusted with diamond–like stars.

Also, a journey across the desert on a camel does not end well for Astrin.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

As usual, I’m working on a few at the same time. I’ve just finished the first of a two–parter about a boy who starts off with no memories of his life before age ten, when he ran away and ended up on the streets. Now aged seventeen and finally in a settled foster home he is struggling to come to terms with horrendous panic attacks which stem from what happened to him during the period of time he doesn’t remember.

He meets another young man with a dark past and become more and more drawn to each other. When his memories finally return the true horror of what he witnessed so many years ago hits him like a sledgehammer and has rebounding effects on everyone around him

I’ve started on the second book where the two boys fight social services and the law to go back to the place where the events took place and confront a murderer who sees them as loose ends.

At the same time I’m working on a story about a man who has a severe speech impediment and a father who considers him to be essentially worthless. Unable to speak, the only way he can manage his frustration and desperation is by visiting a BDSM club where he actively craves pain and humiliation.

Enter the new bouncer, who also happens to be a new employee at Daddy’s firm and we get an interesting pairing indeed. I’ve only just started and already sparks are flying all over the place.

I’m also well into a story about shifters that is taking some strange twists and turns. A rat who turns out to be an angel, a snake who’s actually a flying serpent and a dragon who may have been responsible for the extinction of the dinosaurs and knows a dark secret about Saint George and a whole family of vampires including Dracula and Elizabeth Bathory.

I have a new YA book out with Wayward Ink soon which has one of the most adorable characters I’ve ever written. Watch out for Dory!!

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Terry Pratchett. He had the most amazing mind. The Discworld books are absolute treasures, with so many layers you could read the same book ten times and find new things. The breadth of his knowledge and wisdom is truly astonishing, from quantum physics, to herbalism and witchcraft, to literature and the true nature of stories.

I would love to sit down with him over a pint and talk about Granny Weatherwax, wizards, elves and orangutans.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Is there anything besides reading and writing? I like playing computer games and watching films. I don’t paint as often as I used to and probably should. At the moment. I’m obsessed with hidden object and puzzle games.

Over the summer I was reminded how much I enjoy visiting museums and taking boat trips on rivers. I think we might be doing a lot more of that.

The last question is all yours. Tell the readers anything you like about you, your works, things you like. Anything at all.

This is the most difficult question of all. How do I write anything at all? I’m a total procrastinator and can’t make a decision to save my life. What to say? What to say?

Okay, maybe I’ll talk about something that’s important to me. I write quite a bit about disabilities that aren’t immediately obvious, and in many ways these are the most difficult disabilities to have.

My son is autistic. He’s high functioning and very intelligent but his autism and its accompanying depression and anxiety are disabilities nevertheless.

My son is ‘strange’. He’s ‘different’. Many people might see him as rude, or cold, or antagonistic, but it’s just his way. He’ll always tell the literal truth, and has difficulties in distinguishing when this is appropriate and when it isn’t. He can’t bear it when people are wrong and is compelled to point out their errors no matter what, even when they’re strangers. He’ll get up and walk away from a conversation, or take out his tablet in the middle of dinner, but it’s not because he’s being rude, it’s because he can’t handle the stimuli and needs to shut it out for a while.

My sweet, gentle son can’t handle aggression or violence of any kind. Arguments confuse and upset him, and raised voices send him into almost a fugue state of panic. He finds it very difficult to cope with the world, although he’s getting better as he gets older.

People like my son are invisible. They’re the people who take forever getting things absolutely right. They’re the ones who hold up the queue because they’re challenging the cashier with something that is objectively totally unimportant. They’re the ones who mumble to themselves in the street and count the paving stones, because that helps them focus on something to stop the overwhelming rush of stimli from the number of people and level of noise.

The moral of this tale is that we all make assumptions, and sometimes we don’t have all the information to make correct ones. The next time you see a child acting out, they might not be naughty, they might be autistic. The next time you see a teenager at the dinner table ignoring everyone to play a video game, they might not be rude, they might just need to shut it all out for a while. The next time you’re talking to someone and they laugh at inappropriate moments, or just walk away in the middle of an argument, they might not be rude or stupid or any of the other negative stereotyping we apply, they might just need space.

Treat everyone with respect even if you don’t understand why they do the things they do. It might be because they’re struggling just to live in the world we take for granted. Also be aware that many people, especially autistic people don’t like to be touched or directly challenged, and they can’t make decisions easily.

Okay I’ll shut up now, before you really regret you asked that question.

Thank you for having me on your blog. All the best with your new release, which is out soon right?

Thanks so much, Cheryl for being my guest today!

Blurb: Astrin Raphael wakes up in a strange place, frightened and confused. He is told to trust someone who seems to hate him, and he tries—he really tries. However, things change rapidly when he discovers his friend is actually his archenemy, Rowan Gabriel, whose abusive behavior stems from a deeply ingrained, if unwarranted, hatred over something that happened many years before, and simply wasn’t Astrin’s fault.

When Rowan’s uncle and Astrin’s father are kidnapped by Strebo Michael, the two crown princes are catapulted into an adventure that forces them to work together, and along the way their feelings for each other grow. Rowan is quick to let his hate go, but Astrin can’t release his inhibitions. It takes Astrin almost dying from a poisoned dagger before he finally accepts Rowan’s love.

When they return home, their problems continue as their Houses try to negotiate a way for the young men to be together. It soon becomes clear at least one of them will need to relinquish his throne.

Excerpt

ROWAN WASN’T smiling. He was simmering gently and muttering to himself under his breath. He’d understood and fully appreciated everything his uncle said to him, but it changed nothing. He hated Astrin Raphael, hated him with a vengeance—vengeance for his parents, to be exact. When Astrin’s father had given the order to attack the armored convoy carrying Rowan’s parents back to the capital, he had shattered Rowan’s world. At four years old, the young prince had hardly known his parents, but he could remember the soft touch of his mother’s lips on his hair, the strong arms of his father cradling him and making him feel safer than he ever had since.

That was all gone now, wiped out in one round of intensive fire and a couple of old-fashioned rocket grenades. Gritting his teeth, Rowan pressed his thumb against a panel that checked his DNA. As Crown Prince, there was no security level for which he was not cleared, and almost instantly the panel changed from red to green, letting out a soft hiss as the seal around the door released.

Quite apart from his feelings for Astrin, Rowan hated coming to the infirmary wing. It was thankfully small, as it catered only for those who lived and worked in the Palace Complex. The door opened into a central lobby from which other doors led in three different directions. One led to the administrative center, another to the main body of the hospital, which was more often accessed through the main entrance at the other side of the building, and the third to the private royal apartment. This was used and accessed only by members of the royal family, their personal physicians, and retainers.

As usual a senior administrator sat behind the desk, working before a bank of computers. Because of the unusual circumstances, soldiers stood on either side of the door into the royal suite. They were elite bodyguards, eternally alert and ready to act in a heartbeat should the need arise.

Nodding to the soldiers but ignoring the administrator, Rowan again pressed his thumb against a panel and was admitted to a dimly lit corridor.

At the end of the corridor was an administration chamber similar to the one he’d just left. This was manned predominantly by nurses, as it dealt with only a fraction of the information handled by the mainframe.

Today there were three nurses at the station. One was working hard on a keyboard in front of the monitor screens, apparently updating paperwork.

The other two nurses were lounging. They snapped to attention as Rowan entered. He ignored them.

Crossing the floor, he activated another thumb pad and pushed the door open when it hissed.

His first thoughts when he passed through the door were of utter contempt and disgust. If he hadn’t retained some sense of honor and decency, he would have spat on the sleeping prince. Fortunately, despite his complaints to his uncle, he realized it was necessary to treat the other prince with a degree of respect. It was vital the negotiations with his father were a success. Rowan therefore swallowed his feelings and went to work.

The boy was unconscious and completely helpless. As a Class One Prisoner, it was too dangerous to allow him any kind of freedom, even the freedom of consciousness.

For normal Class One Prisoners the overcrowded prisons had, over the years, developed containment chambers. Here, many men and women could be economically housed in pods, kept in a comatose state for however long their sentence might be, constantly played audio messages designed to precipitate rehabilitation. They were roused from their coma only during the last months of their sentence, when they had regular consultations with clinical therapists who assessed whether their minds had developed sufficient conscience to allow them to be released back into society.

Some prisoners had committed crimes so severe it was unlikely they would ever be roused. Their pods occupied a room all of their own, which was entered only to install a new pod or to remove that of a prisoner who had died.

However, no one was going to put Astrin, Crown Prince of House Raphael and The Western Kingdoms, in a stasis pod. Although he was a prisoner, he was still a member of the royal family of a major ruling House, and therefore deserving of special treatment.

Instead of a pod, he was reclining on a state-of-the-art bed, his head and shoulders propped up on white pillows. Although it was not possible to see from casual examination, his body was suspended from the shoulders down within an electrically generated field. No part of it was touching either the bed or the covering sheets, thereby preventing bed sores. In addition the field provided constant deep stimulation to his muscles, preventing atrophy and circulation issues.

Tubes inserted into the veins in his arms fed him a regular mixture of drugs, which maintained his perpetual coma, and another tube inserted into his stomach through his abdomen was used to feed him daily with a concentrated, thick liquid that contained all the nutrients needed to keep him alive.

It was Rowan’s duty to feed the sleeping prince, then disengage the force field and wash his body, making sure he stayed clean and there was no infection or irritation of the skin. Rowan hated it. He hated Astrin, and touching him repulsed him. Also the mixture of sedative drugs and the soupy liquid diet produced an absolutely foul waste that made him ponder at times whether it was deliberately engineered by his uncle as a rather basic lesson in humility.

It never occurred to Rowan that, if he found the whole thing demeaning and sickening, had Astrin been conscious enough to be aware of what was happening to his body, he would, no doubt, have found it even more so.

AboutTheAuthor

Cheryl Headford was born into a poor mining family in the South Wales Valleys. Until she was sixteen, the toilet was at the bottom of the garden and the bath hung on the wall. Her refrigerator was a stone slab in the pantry, and there was a black lead fireplace in the kitchen. They look lovely in a museum but aren’t so much fun to clean.

Cheryl has always been a storyteller. As a child, she’d make up stories for her nieces, nephews, and cousin, and they’d explore the imaginary worlds she created, in play.

Later in life, Cheryl became the storyteller for a reenactment group who traveled widely, giving a taste of life in the Iron Age. As well as having an opportunity to run around hitting people with a sword, she had an opportunity to tell stories of all kinds, sometimes of her own making, to all kinds of people. The criticism was sometimes harsh, especially from the children, but the reward enormous.

It was there she began to appreciate the power of stories and the primal need to hear them. In ancient times, the wandering bard was the only source of news and the storyteller the heart of the village, keeping the lore and the magic alive. Although much of the magic has been lost, the stories still provide a link to the part of us that wants to believe that it’s still there, somewhere.

In present times, Cheryl lives in a terraced house in the Valleys with her son, dog, hamster, and two cats. Her daughter has deserted her for the big city, but they’re still close. She’s never been happier since she was made redundant and is able to devote herself entirely to her twin loves of writing and art.

Lovers, Losers and You—Blog Tour and Giveaway—An Interview With Skylar M. Cates.

Many years ago (okay so like two and a half, but it seems longer) I ‘met’ Skylar Cates—on line.  This year I got to meet her in person, not once, but twice. When I got the chance to join her current blog tour, I knew I wanted to interview her again. So, with that, take a few moments to read the interview, check out the new book (and hopefully go buy it) and then enter the giveaway.

An Interview With Skylar M. Cates.

Welcome back Skylar. Since it’s been a couple years since you were last here, remind people about yourself and tell us anything new.

Hello! Thank you for having me back. I write contemporary MM for Dreamspinner. I have two series and a few standalone books.

Your first book, Exposed was released in 2013. How many books have you written since then?

Wow. I never actually added this up before, but I’m proud to say nine books and counting.

Last year you finished the third book in the ‘Guy’ Series. Any plans for addition books in the series?

I’m delighted you asked this. Yes, A Guy’s Thanksgiving will be released this November from Dreamspinner. It’s the final book. All of the previous couples are there. The book is a holiday one, and it seems like a wonderful place to end their journey.

Your books to date are almost exclusively contemporary MM romance. Any intention to move into any other genres?

I have notes for books in other genres. The one that might actually see the light of day is a MM shifter book. I never thought I’d do a werewolf story, but I originally answered an anthology call for it and decided it was truly a full length piece.

This year you started the ‘Sunshine and Happiness’ series. What inspired this series?

The first book in the series, Here for You, was inspired by two things:

I had the desire to write about a group of guys sharing a house in South Florida. I love exploring friendships.

The other inspiration is a friend of mine who was training for an Aids Ride on his bike, and he was a victim of an awful hit and run. He recovered, but his life was forever altered by the event.

Let’s talk Lovers, Losers, and You, book two in the series. Tell us about that.

I wanted a novel that explored how a couple manages a long distance problem. How do you know when the distance is worth bridging? What are you willing to sacrifice to be with that person?

That was the overall theme that began the book. It’s also about friendships and family.

Tell us a bit about your main characters, Own and Andrew.

Although Owen is from a loving family, he’s adopted, and his looks and interests are different. He struggles, as many of us do, to figure out who he is. Owen’s a history teacher whose own history is vague. When he learns about his biological brother Brendan, he feels compelled to get some answers. He’s a little shy.

Andrew is strong-willed and determined. He’s tired of being that nice guy who finishes last. He wants to go after his dreams for the café that he owns. He’s no time for dating.

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

The End.

Because you did it. You didn’t give up. LOL!

I actually enjoy the first few chapters too. I get involved with the rhythm of the book then, and I begin to hear the character’s voice come out. It’s fun.

What part made you struggle the most?

Definitely the middle is toughest for me. It’s a jigsaw puzzle where the frame is easy, but those middle pieces can be tricky.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

Owen has a special needs sister, loosely inspired by my real life stepbrother.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

The third in this series for Tomas and Marc. I’m also working on the kinky werewolf story I mentioned, and I’m kicking around a joint novel with the fabulous Cate Ashwood.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

I did enjoy Orphan Train and Luna lately. But I read anything and everything!

My main concern is that readers often feel ashamed in what they choose to read, especially from folks who never even picked up a romance novel. I say to hell with that!

Reading is a great freedom, and I think there should never be a stigma attached to it.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

I once met Adrienne Rich, who was my poetry idol, at a conference. But I was too afraid to approach her directly. Gah! I regret that and wish I could have another opportunity to chat with her.

The other authors are all people from my childhood. The authors who made me pant and tremble and yearn for more, more, more!

I think those early reading experiences stay with us, you know?

I’d love the chance to meet childhood influences like Shel Silverstein, Edgar Alan Poe, S.E. Hinton, and Judy Blume.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

I enjoy my family time. We recently went zip-lining and it was a lot of fun. Okay, I was terrified. My kids went upside-down like little daredevils while I had my eyes shut most of the time, but we had a blast. No regrets. I would go again and actually keep my eyes open. If I could, I’d do an activity like that every month with my children.

I rescued a dog this summer too. I love animals.

Besides family time and animals, I enjoy swimming, movies, and eating ethnic foods….Hmmm, I suddenly feel as if I am applying for an online dating application. Yikes! I’ll stop here.

Thank you for hosting me!

Excerpt

IT HAD been Owen’s idea to ask for his contract a week early. St. James Academy usually delivered them in the faculty mailboxes a day before spring break, but he had been eager to see if he would be offered an increase in salary. The students had voted him teacher of the year, and Owen had single-handedly slaved over the new schedule that would rotate their classes more like a college and create a more flexible day for students and faculty alike. Everybody had been excited and full of praise for his suggestions. It wasn’t mere ego to think he’d earned the 5 percent that more experienced faculty received. Owen tore open the manila envelope and quickly scanned its contents, his heart thumping hopefully.

Instead of an increase, though, he found something else entirely.

A morality clause.

Owen had spent years telling himself all of it mattered: awards, student reviews, hard work. But did any of it? Because more often than not in this world, one misstep resulted in wiping out all the rest of the path.

Son of a bitch.

Now he was blindly heading down the highway in his beat-up Honda, and Owen had the words playing over and over in his head as he drove to the outskirts of the small coastal town of Ocean Vista, Florida. He pulled off to the side of the road to think. Ahead of him was the town and behind him the highway. The day was without the mercy of the slightest breeze, and Owen felt a hot trickle of sweat at his neck.

He’d come to learn about his biological brother’s life. Each time his brother’s best friend Cole wrote to him, it had torn at Owen’s heart until he finally couldn’t ignore the need to visit. If he’d also come to avoid possible threats to his career as a teacher and hide out in a place where nobody knew him or expected anything from him—well, that was a fact he could keep to himself.

His stomach growled. First things first. He needed a good meal. Owen was normally of solid build, but he’d lost some weight. Bone-tired most nights, it was too much bother to cook. If his mama knew how he’d let things slide with his meals, she’d be all over his ass. Cooking good food and teaching manners were the cornerstones of his mama’s parenting skills.

His mama could also pack a suitcase like nobody’s business, having followed Daddy’s career from one place to another. She folded with military precision. Not so Owen, who haphazardly tossed in three pairs of khaki shorts, one pair of jeans, and some random polo shirts. He packed white socks, sensible underwear, and toiletries. At the last possible second he remembered a nicer outfit and a bathing suit, but he had little occasion for other clothes beyond school functions.

Owen gave all of himself to his job at St. James Academy. Hell, he lived at his job. The private school encouraged the faculty to use their tiny campus apartments or be in their dorms as a “parent.” He’d had a plan, mapping out his entire future. He was going to be head of the history department, then assistant headmaster. He’d move into the headmaster’s big sprawling house by the lake one day. Nothing had changed. Only….

Faculty could be dismissed for any reason deemed “immoral” or “unacceptable” behavior not reflecting the values of the school. Private schools sometimes did this, but this was new for St. James Academy. A pushy member of the board of trustees, Mrs. Wilma Temple, or “Mrs. Moneybags,” as the staff secretly referred to her, insisted on it. “The world is more and more filled with degenerates,” she warned as she pointed a bony finger. “We all need to protect the St. James Academy proper way of life.”

Although nobody defined the morality clause to specifically include sexual behavior, Owen could easily imagine their reaction to his arriving with a boyfriend for a student basketball game or theater performance, or even a faculty Christmas party. They’d say he was “flaunting his lifestyle” and “endangering the minds of impressionable, minor youths.” Since this was a private school, not a public one, there was nothing protecting Owen’s job.

He’d been sick when he’d gone back to his small apartment.

Not that Owen had a boyfriend to bring to a school event. He’d been alone and dateless for a long time, at least six months. His family complained good-naturedly that Owen did not make enough time for a proper social life, so busy was he with his lesson plans and textbooks.

For that reason, it had been easy not to share his personal life with his coworkers. He just couldn’t bring himself to sign a contract vowing to uphold Mrs. Temple’s idea of how he should live his life, but neither had he marched into the headmaster’s office and torn it up. He had until vacation ended to decide what to do.

Owen did not want to stay where his behavior would be so monitored and weighed. No, thank you. The ballsy thing to do would be to leave. To be brave like his parents. Like his sister was every day. But it wasn’t as simple for him as that.

St. James Academy was his lifeline. Owen had gone there as a student since sixth grade, when his family moved to the Buckhead area, when he’d craved stability desperately, and he’d thrived there. Owen’s mama, a successful television reporter, and his daddy, the ex-jock who now owned one of the largest sporting goods stores in Georgia, allowed their geeky, dreamy boy to attend St. James, even though they had reservations, but Owen had loved St. James Academy from the first. He loved the big brick buildings and the shade of the dogwood trees, could sit for hours in the immaculate gardens filled with fragrant jasmine and azaleas. He could spend every day with a good book and be perfectly happy. His favorite part of the day had been discussing battle strategies with old Mr. Hewitt, the very history teacher whom Owen had replaced a year or two ago.

Mr. Hewitt—cranky, heavyset, food in his beard—had been the most amazing teacher Owen ever met. He made history come alive. Owen wished for even half his success in the classroom. In those days the school motto was Honor Above Everything. What would it be now? Be Careful, I’m Watching You?

Owen sighed to himself as he drove through the little South Florida town. He’d have to sign the contract and make the best of it. All he’d ever wanted was to be needed by somebody, and his students needed him. The school was his life. He’d have to hope he was never outed on the Internet or questioned too closely by Mrs. Temple. If he ever did find love, he’d have to hope the guy would be willing to spend most of their time in private places. It seemed like the best solution, the most logical one. The one that would keep all his planning on track.

So why did he feel like such garbage?

He needed this temporary change of scenery. Ocean Vista was tiny, but it had a long main street filled with cutesy shops and restaurants. Perfect. It was early morning, not many cars around, and Owen had no trouble parking. He headed toward the nearest place with a sign that promised a meal.

Fret; by Sandrine Gasq-Dion—Blog Tour Interview and Giveaway

Today please welcome Sandrine Gasq-Dion to the blog. She’s here to talk about herself, her writing, and her new release, Fret.

An Interview with Sandrine Gasq-Dion

Welcome Sandrine! Since Since this is your first time on the blog, please tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi!! I’m a mother of four and expecting two grandchildren within the next few months! I’ve been married to the military since the age of nineteen and grew up with Old scholl French parents. I’ve got a wonderful support system as my entire family is very supportive of my career. I guess I am extremely lucky to have such an open-minded family!

You’re quite the profilic author, when did you publish your first book?

A Marked Man was published in 2012 and I haven’t looked back!

You’ve written in multilple sub genres; Greek Gods, shifters, military men. How much research do you put into each new situation?

Tons. Luckily, I have a huge amount of military guys as friends, so they always weigh in on the stuff I write. The shifters and Olympians I spend countless hours researching Greek Gods and watching old werewolf movies.

Do you have any plans to branch off into a new direction any time soon?

I do! I am now writing a rock series and I also have 5 books in the Men of Manhattan that I write for Wilde City!

Your latest book, Fret. Tell us about that.

Fret came about when another author was thinking of writing an anthology that revolved around Actors/ Rock stars. Needless to say, my mind began an outline almost instantly and Axel and Gareth were born!

Is this part of a series or will it become one?

Fret is book one in the rock series, there will be four more after is. (There is a sneak peek at book 2 at the end of book one!)

What inspired Fret?

As I said, another author mentioned an anthology and my mind went off and running.

Tell us a bit about your main characters, Alex and Gareth.

Axel is your typical no-bullshit rough alpha male. As a former Navy SEAL now hired merecenary, he doesn’t have time for touchy feely. Gareth is the shy-quiet type that prefers to linger in the background. He’s extremely talented and also very sweet. He can also hold is own and can be quite fierce!

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

I think the best part and most fun was hanging out with the guys of “No Other Option”, A band I met and friended when I moved to Flagstaff, Az to write the books. I got to spend time with them and sit in on a few of their sets. They are awesome guys!

What part made you struggle the most?

I think trying to figure out how to end it. I know there are more books in the series, so there reallybisn’t an end to Gareth and Axel, you’ll see them throughout the next four books!

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

The guys go on tour in Europe, so the reader is treated to parts of Italy, Greece and Germany.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Book two in the Rock Series, ‘Jinxed’!

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

Any of the Rock God series from Ann Lister!

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Stephen King. I love his work!

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Spending times with my family. They are crazy…

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

Thanks to the military and my parents, I was able to see much of the world. When I write a book, I’ve either spent time in that state/city/town/country or actually lived there. I’ve taken much of what the military guys tell me and put it in the book. I do, however, embellish. It is fiction ya know… J

Blurb: Former Navy SEAL Axel Blaze lives a solitary life. He doesn’t do emotions, and he doesn’t do babysitting. Used to being on his own, his job consists of Wetwork (a charming term coined by the KGB) for his former Master Chief, Mac. When an out-of-the-ordinary job lands on his doorstep, Axel heads down a path that includes a famous heavy metal rock band and one quiet, vulnerable, guitar-shredding virtuoso named Gareth Wolf.

Gareth Wolf’s life changed in an instant when a car he was a passenger in crashed, hurting his brother’s best friend and the band’s lead guitarist. They created the band, Skull Blasters, as kids. Gareth had always been happy in the background, playing roadie. With the lead guitarist’s injury, Gareth is suddenly thrust into the limelight and into a frenzied life he never imagined for himself. Finally fed up with living a lie, Gareth comes out as gay in a newspaper interview and finds himself in the bulls-eye of a crazed stalker. Somebody wants Gareth hurt – or worse – and Mac has been hired to be sure that doesn’t happen. Babysitting duty is NOT Axel’s strong suit, but Mac won’t be budged.

Enter Axel Blaze. Against his better judgment, the big man takes the job to protect the shy musician. The more time he spends with Gareth Wolf, the more he admires the man. Where’s a simple assassination when you need one? The situation becomes more volatile for each man as the attempts on Gareth escalate just as Axel finds himself falling for the quiet lead guitarist.

Strong, funny, smart-ass — and kinda sweet Axel is everything Gareth has ever wanted in a man. Too bad he’s off limits. As the stalker grows bolder, Gareth and Axel move closer emotionally – but is it too late? All Axel knows is that they don’t stand a chance if he can’t find the maniac trying to kill the man he’s come to care about. A lot.

Everyone knows that relationships that begin in pressured or volatile situations eventually fizzle out.

Or do they?

Excerpt

Thumping music was shaking the walls of the Dome as I headed for my designated spot. I guess I’m meeting Paul, the band’s manager.

I took mental notes as I passed through the crowd of screaming, jumping people. The band was rocking it out and I sought out Gareth Wolf. There were two guitarists, but I found him right away. Black hair touched his shoulders and his lean body moved with his guitar.

He was in his element.

The song was wrapping up and the floor was shaking from the bass drum. The floor-to-ceiling speakers pumped out the last notes of the song. The crowd immediately went wild as Ransom Fox leaned over the stage.

“Let’s hear it for the best lead guitarist on the planet!” he shouted.

Gareth shook his hair back and bowed with one hand out. Again, the crowd screamed, shouted and whistled. Ransom went on to give some love to the other members of the group.

I rolled my eyes and pushed my way through the crowd toward the side of the stage. A large man eyed me and then nodded as I walked by. Again, I could have been wearing a ‘Hello, I’m God’ tag and security wouldn’t have batted an eyelash. As it was, my tag faced backwards; he couldn’t even see my name or credentials.

Security for the Skull Blaster band was sorely lacking.

I sat through another hour of bone-jarring hardcore metal before the band finally left the stage. I scanned the area for their manager, but no luck.

I walked right behind the curtain and fell into step with the band members as they trudged toward their dressing rooms. They didn’t even notice me — and I’m really hard to miss.

They stepped into the dressing room; I followed and slammed the door shut behind me. Ransom turned and his eyes widened.

“Who the fuck are you?!”

“Nice of you to finally notice me,” I pointed out.

“Paul!” Ransom thundered. He immediately moved in front of Gareth, shielding him.

“Oh for fucks sake.” I arched a brow.

The door behind me opened and a startled man looked me over from head to toe. He flipped my name badge over and sighed audibly, clearly relieved.

“It’s cool, Ransom. This is the guy I was telling you about.”

“You could have mentioned he was a semi-truck.” Ransom’s eyes narrowed.

“I’m sorry I couldn’t meet you,” Paul apologized to me. “I ran into some media and couldn’t get away.”

“Not that this isn’t fun — because, oh so much fun — but I’m here to do a job. So I need to speak to whoever is in charge of ‘security.’ Now.” I leaned very slightly — but effectively — in to Paul’s face.

“Why?”

I turned to see Gareth peeking out from behind his brother’s broad shoulders. His eyes were a shade of green I’d never seen before, and with his pale complexion and dark hair? The guy was a looker and then some.

“Because band security royally sucks. I walked right on back here with them and not one person noticed or stopped me. That is not acceptable.”

“Who are you?” Gareth gaped.

I pinned him with a hard look. “I’m your bodyguard.”

Ransom chuckled.

“What the actual fuck?” Gareth stepped in front of his brother. “Is this a joke?”

“Nope.” Ransom shook his head.

“Jinx, Harley, Rebel. Give us a few, eh?” Paul opened the door and tilted his head toward the hallway.

“Sure thing, boss.” Rebel tipped his hat and winked at me.

I leaned against the wall as the members walked out. I overheard one of them, not sure which, talking to another.

“Did you see the size of that guy?”

“How could you miss him?” another one answered.

Paul shut the door and turned to Gareth with an apologetic smile.

“I knew what you’d say if we told you beforehand,” he admitted.

“Oh, did you now? You had to get me Conan the Destroyer? Jesus Christ!”

“Gareth,” Ransom warned.

“What? This is stupid! I don’t need a human shield!”

“You’re going to play nice and allow this man to watch your back, Gareth!” Ransom shouted. “You’re getting threats since you came out! I insist you be kept safe!”

“Gareth, why don’t you go clean up? Then you and Mr. Blaze can get acquainted.”

“Seriously? Blaze?” Gareth snorted.

I narrowed my eyes at the kid. Well, to me he was a kid, after everything I’d seen in my life. Gareth was almost twenty-three and I was pushing thirty. We locked eyes for a few seconds before he turned away.

Guest Author Anna Butler—Interview and Giveaway

Today, I’m please to have Anna Butler stop by for an interview. I love finding new Science Fiction and Fantasy authors and Anna writes great Sci-Fi. I convinced her to sit down for an interview and she’s coming to my blog with two different giveaways. Be sure to read through to the end for more details.

Interview:

Welcome Anna, let’s start with you telling readers a little about yourself.

Thanks for hosting me, Andrew!

Well, I’ll start with the obvious: I’m British and female. Possibly the most interesting things about me is that I live in London, which is one of the most vibrant and exciting places in the world. There’s always something interesting going on if you have an interest in the arts, writing and theatre. I’ve lived here with my husband, David, since university. We don’t have children, although we have seven nephews and nieces between us. A couple of years ago, we brought my mother here to live with us, and another recent addition to our household has been an over-energetic cockapoo, whose demands for exercise at least keep me fit. At least Mum doesn’t make me take her out twice daily for walks!

I worked for many years in communications for the UK government. My main speciality was in Internal Communications, but I’ve also run some successful public information and marketing campaigns. I chose early retirement recently and now I’m focusing on writing as a full time career.

When did you know you wanted to be a writer?

I can’t remember not being a story teller, although writing them down came later. I’ve written stories since childhood, starting with the adventures of Jimpy, the toy chimpanzee I took everywhere with me. I moved on to fanfiction in early adolescence, with some shamefully Mary Sue stories set in the Star Trek universe. I still dabble in fanfiction, now and again.

What was the first story you wrote?

I’ll take that as the first piece I thought was good enough to share with the world. I self-published FlashWired a couple of years ago. It’s a sci-fi novella set in a future where Earth is expanding across the galaxy. The Carson is a Pathfinder-class starship, committed to planetary exploration and designating planets for development as human colonies. Cal Paxton and Jeeze Madrid are the top scouting team on the Carson. They’re wingmen, best friends and lovers. When Jeeze is shot down over a planet inhabited by a race Earth has never before encountered, it’s weeks before the Carson can finally mount a rescue mission. Cal and his brother Noah lead the rescue, only to find things are not going to be as simple as they hoped…

Describe how it felt when you saw your first book published?

Gilded Scarab

I was dizzy with it! I had The Gilded Scarab (a steampunk romance published by Dreamspinner) published on the Monday, and Gyrfalcon (Wilde City Press) followed on the Wednesday of the same week. I barely had time to breathe for a month! Honestly, my main impression is of being slightly punch drunk.

I will admit that when the ebook popped into my in box from the publishers and I went to look at my Amazon page, I may have got a little tearful. The sense of “I’ve done it!” was very strong.

Let’s talk Taking Shield. Tell us about the series and Book 1, Gyrfalcon.

The series is set thousands of years in an alternate universe. Earth’s a dead planet, dark for more than ten thousand years; lost for so long no one even knows where the solar system is. Her last known colony, Albion, founded long after the destruction of Earth, is fighting a last-ditch battle for survival in a war that’s dragged on for generations.

Albion has become a regional galactic power in its own right, but its expansion has brought it into conflict with an alien race, the Maess. No one has ever seen a Maess and lived to tell the tale. All they see are fighting drones, cyborg constructs that have slowly become more humanoid in appearance. Bottom line: humanity is losing.

The series combines science fiction adventure with an intense love story (although I wouldn’t call it a romance). Shield Captain Bennet is both a warrior on—and behind—the front line and an analyst with the Military Strategy Unit. He not only leads behind-the-lines raids, he plans them. Over the Taking Shield arc, Bennet will see the extremes to which humanity’s enemies, and his own people, will go to win the war. It won’t leave him unchanged and some days, he won’t even sure what victory looks like.

gyrfalcon_cvr_f-businesscardTo quote the blurb for Gyrfalcon, the first book of the series: Bennet has planned a dangerous infiltration mission behind enemy lines to garner priceless intelligence. His task is complicated by the changing relationships with his long-term partner, with his father—and with Flynn, the new lover who will turn his world upside-down. He expects to risk his life; that’s acceptable, to give Albion a military advantage. He expects that what he brings back from the mission will alter the course of the war against his people’s faceless enemy, although he’s realistic enough to know it may not necessarily be the outcome he hopes for. What he doesn’t expect is that it will change his life and that Flynn will be impossible to forget.

Who are the main characters?

Shield Captain Bennet, who is the second child and eldest son of a prominent member of the Fleet (i.e. the space navy). He has a very strong military background. He says that ‘duty, honour and service’ make up the family’s triple goddess. He’s dedicated and serious, committed to finding ways to help Albion survive and win the war. He’s also gay, which has been a source of conflict with his religious, more conventional father.

Fleet Lieutenant Flynn is an orphan following a raid on Thorn, one of Albion’s largest and oldest colonies. Although he and his mother survived the attack and returned to Albion, she never recovered and committed suicide when he was 8. Brought up in an orphanage, Flynn won his way into the Military Academy on a series of scholarships. He hides his intelligence and hard-work behind an insouciant, devil-may-care exterior, claiming his greatness derives from being the best Hornet pilot in the entire Fleet. He may be right, there!

Book Two, Heart Scarab picks up with the main characters from Book One, what’s happening now?

It’s set around a year and a half after Gyrfalcon. Bennet and Flynn have not met since.

Bennet’s Shield unit is involved in the evacuation of a small colony planet in the teeth of a Maess invasion. Injured in shellfire as the last cutter leaves, Bennet is left behind, believed dead. In reality he’s found by colonists who’ve also missed the last boat out, and he builds up a small collection of people for whose future he becomes responsible as he tries to find them a way home.

The book covers the reactions of his family, of his partner Joss, and of course, of Flynn to his supposed death. When Bennet’s found and brought home, the impact of his return from the dead changes a lot of relationships, not all of them for the better. But it also gives him and Flynn another chance to be together, for a short time.

How many books do you envision in the series?

Five or six. I’m wavering, because the last section of the series is proving difficult! It all depends on how long book 5 turns out to be and where I can, reasonably, end it. There’s a lot to cover in it, but it looks like it may be one of those odd animals that will make either one very long book or two unsatisfying shorter ones. Believe me, I am glaring at the first drafts and swearing a lot.

The third book, Makepeace, will be published next January, and I’m currently finalising book 4, The Chains of Their Sins, which should be out sometime next July.

Tell us something not in the blurb.

You get a much deeper insight into Bennet’s relationship with Joss, what started it and what’s sustained it for over nine years. Joss wasn’t a sympathetic character in Gyrfalcon, but I hope that in this book, his anguish as well as his faults are in better balance. Joss comes to represent Bennet’s past, and he gets what I think are some of the most poetic sections of the book as he reflects on what he’s lost.

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

The moment when I fire up Scrivenor, and Bennet and Flynn spring up to grin at me and press in close to make sure I get the story right. I never get over how lucky I am to be able to do this.

What’s your least favorite?

Fighting my tendency to want to go over the previous day’s writing before I start today’s, and tinkering. I could spend hours worrying over a few sentences, polishing and honing them, when I should be just getting the words of the next section down. I suspect we all have to fight against this bad habit.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

The fourth Shield book, The Chains of Their Sins. In book three, Makepeace, Bennet has recovered from his injuries and is now on his rotation out of Shield, the regular ‘rest’ Shield officers are given in the normal services. Bennet chooses Fleet, and is sent to the dreadnought Corvus for a year. While there, his analysis of the T18 data he got in book one leads eventually to a horrific discovery on Makepeace, once a colony owned by Albion and now a Maess base. In Chains, the political and personal consequences of that discovery start to unravel, and Bennet has the added pressure of being sent to the Gyrfalcon for his final year of his rotation out, where he has not only to cope with his father’s expectations, but manage his relationship with Flynn. Remember that Bennet is dedicated and serious and won’t break the fraternisation regulations. That doesn’t make things easy.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

One of the most under-rated books I’ve read recently is Elin Gregory’s A Taste of Copper. It’s not a long book, a novella really. I like historicals where I get a real sense and feeling for the time being written about. All too often, it’s modern people in fancy dress pretending to be gay men in Regency London or the American Civil War. But this is a perfect little gem that just feels right. Elin’s caught so much of the period that I was never jarred out of the narrative. And a big, big plus point for me is that Elin treats her readers with respect, paying them the compliment of respecting their intelligence by not dumbing down the language or the terminology. A lovely little book, and highly recommended.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Barbara Pym. She wrote books on a narrow canvas, set just after the war or in the 50s, and her heroines live quite narrow lives, revolving around church or around anthropology (and sometimes both). It’s hard to explain, but she reminds me of Jane Austen. She takes the same premise of a very few people as her cast, and writes with the same sort of ironic mind and eye. Her books are populated with wonderful characters and funny situations. They are very English, I suppose, but I reread them constantly.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Gardening and embroidery, although I don’t have a lot of time for either now. I designed our (very small) London garden and I’m looking forward to a bigger challenge when we move to the country later this year.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

Woah, but that’s a hard one. The most revealing one, too.

I’ve pondered what to say here, but I think I’ll end with something that smacks of a little irony. I write science fiction set in a future so many thousands of years hence that Earth is gone. Yet my deepest and most abiding love is history.             If you’ve read any of the Shield books, you’ll have noticed that they’re laced through with references to classical Greece (all the provinces have Greek names) and, most of all, with Egyptology. Their gods are the Egyptian pantheon, the leaders who led their ancestors from a dying Earth were Pharaohs. I had a lot of fun with that!             I love museums, and of course London has dozens, from very large to small. For several years now I’ve been a volunteer docent at the Geffrye Museum, one of the smallest. I love meeting and talking to people, and taking them on tours of the museum certainly gives me lots of opportunity. Sadly for my museum work, as I mentioned above, we’ve just made the decision to move out to the country. I’ll have to find a local history museum there that needs a talkative writer on staff!

About the Book:

HeartScarab_cvr_f (1)Telnos is an unpleasant little planet, inhabited by religious fanatics in the festering marshlands and unregistered miners running illegal solactinium mines up in the hills. But the Maess want Telnos, and Shield Captain Bennet’s job is to get out as many civilians as he can—a task that leaves him lying on Telnos while the last cutter of evacuees escapes in the teeth of the Maess invasion.

Bennet is listed missing in action, believed dead on a planet now overrun by Maess drones. His family is grieving. His long-term partner, Joss, is both mourning and guilt-ridden.

And Fleet Lieutenant Flynn? Flynn is desolate. Flynn is heart-broken… no. Flynn is just broken

Excerpt:

Flynn liked kissing. In fact, Flynn considered himself something of an expert in the art of kissing. He’d tried it in all its forms, from the first tentative pressing together of juvenile lips that had you wondering what all the fuss was about, to the discovery that if you just opened your mouth and, you know, kind of moved everything, your tongue suddenly had a lot more positive uses than just allowing you to articulate clearly and swallow things without choking. Flynn got the hang of it, ran with it, and never looked back.

Soft kisses and hard kisses; kisses that were wet and slobbery with people who didn’t know exactly how to hold their lips to get the best and sexiest effect, and wet and sexy kisses with people who did. Kisses that turned the blood to molten lava and kisses that cooled you as you came down. Kisses that inflamed and kisses that soothed; feverish kisses and languid after-sex kisses. Kisses that meant only good fellowship and casual affection, and kisses that were desire incarnate.

Flynn had not only tried them all, he’d made them his own. He was considered by all the relevant authorities to be rather a specialist in the area.

Flynn really liked kissing. He had been gratified by the discovery that Bennet liked it too. Because now he could add slow kisses to the repertoire. Kisses so leisured and intense the world came to a stop while a hot tongue moved over his lips, explored each and every tooth down to the last molar, while teeth pulled at his bottom lip, biting it gently until it was swollen and hot and heavy, and he had to lick his lip to cool it and met Bennet’s tongue with his. Only then, would Bennet’s mouth close over his and start a real in-earnest kiss that lasted several more centuries. Those were kisses Bennet seemed to specialise in.

Flynn was always willing to take tips from another expert. A man should always try to extend his technique.

Guest Author – Charlie Cochet – Interview and Giveaway

thTo paraphrase Lumiere from Beauty and the Beast (yes, my life is one giant kids movie/book/story/adventure):

It is with deepest pride and greatest pleasure, that I welcome you today. And now I welcome you to relax, pull up a chair, as the Land of Make Believe proudly presents –

An Interview with Charlie Cochet:

Welcome Charlie. Let’s start by telling people a bit about you.

Hi, Andrew! Thank you so much for having me! I’m Charlie Cochet, an author of M/M Romance with stories across many different genres, from Fantasy to Contemporary. I live in Central Florida with an adorable Doxiepoo named Olly who’s trying to take over the world one chew toy at a time. I love books, movies, music, and coffee. Lots and lots of coffee.

My first Charlie Cochet book was, The Auspicious Troubles of Chance, part of, “The Auspicious Troubles of Love” series. Take a moment to talk about that series.

This series was my first M/M Romance despite not being the first of my stories to be published. It holds a special place in my heart. The series centers around family, but not the one you’re born into. It spans from the early 1800s through to the 1930s across several continents. It’s a historical series set around a group of young men who’ve all found themselves alone, lost, and in pain for who and what they are, yet despite their hardships and heartaches, they’ve persevered, clinging onto hope, and learning to once again put their trust and hearts in the hands of others. The series follows these young men on their heartfelt journey to finding love.

Do you plan to write any more in that series?

There is a third book planned in this series which is at the moment titled The Affectionate Inaccuracies of Bobby Haven, The Auspicious Troubles of Love: Book Three and focuses on the love story between Alexander and Bobby.

You’ve have a Christmas themed series, “North Pole City.” Can we expect a new on this year?

Absolutely! These stories have sort of become like my own little Christmas tradition. LOL. This year we have Loving Blitz, which focuses on Cupid and Blitzen from the Rein Dear Squadron, and I have another two planned.

Okay, so let’s talk “Thirds.” Against the Grain is the fifth and most current book. What this one about?

In this book, we’ve reached a point in our series timeline where the focus shifts to Ash and Cael. It continues where Rise & Fall left off, which is with Sloane and Ash in a very uncomfortable situation, namely facing their pissed off sergeant and his baseball bat Old Betsy. Throughout the book we get to see Ash and Cael they get together, something they’ve been building up to in the last four books alongside Dex and Sloane’s relationship. They both have their demons to battle in this book and they have to face up to their pasts in order to move on. Plus we get some answers to some questions posed in previous books regarding mysterious incidents and individuals.

Who are the main players?

Ash and Cael are at the center of the romance, but we also get to see the other couples on the team, so the rest of Destructive Delta.

Tell us something interesting that’s not in the blurb?

Ash bakes. LOL. Everyone’s very surprised to find that out in the book. Ash loves to bake. He finds it very therapeutic. Also that Cael isn’t as squeaky clean as everyone believed. He’s always so cheerful and sweet that no one realizes he’s hiding a painful past.

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

Ash. Writing Ash is always fun because there’s really not a whole lot he can’t say or do. He’s foul-mouthed, foul-tempered, aggressive, in your face, but there’s so much more under the surface, and it was great showing readers that side of him, because with Ash a lot of times what comes out of his mouth isn’t what’s going on in his head, so we get to hear his thoughts as opposed to just the insults or teasing that comes out of his mouth.

What part made you struggle the most?

Finding a balance between their romance and the overall story arc. Some things get wrapped up in this book from the ongoing story arc, but the book is also pretty heavy on the romance. Unlike Dex and Sloane who get six books for their relationship, Ash & Cael only get one. Of course their relationship grows throughout the series, but they only get one POV book, the one where they finally work through their problems to find love with each other. But like I said, there are important key plot elements that have been leading up to this book that also need to be addressed.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on a story for the new Dreamspun Desires line which I’m very excited about. There will be more on that soon. Also the next THIRDS book, which is book 7 called Smoke & Mirrors where we return to Dex and Sloane. I have a pretty full schedule between now and early 2017.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

I’m super behind on my reading, but the last book I read was Down and Dirty (Cole McGinnis #5). I love Rhys Ford, and there hasn’t been a book of hers I haven’t enjoyed immensely. If you haven’t read the Cole McGinnis series, I highly recommend it!

What’s a fun – non-writing – day for you?

Anything that involves me getting out of my writing cave. LOL. Shopping, going out to eat, catching a movie, hanging out with friends, relaxing, spending time with my Doxiepoo fur-baby, reading, catching up on my favorite TV shows.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

I’m super excited to have my first contemporary romance coming out on Aug 19th, Beware of Geeks Bearing Gifts. It’s a fun, sweet little novella about a gruff Miami SWAT officer and his geeky brownie-baking neighbor. I had so much fun with it. It also sort of kicks off my break into other genres. Alongside the continuing THIRDS series, I have all kinds of stories coming up, from cozy mysteries, to more contemporary, science fiction, and more! A huge thank you to everyone who’s stopped by!

Thanks for being my guest, Charlie!

Blurb: As the fiercest Defense Agent at the THIRDS, Destructive Delta’s Ash Keeler is foul-mouthed and foul-tempered. But his hard-lined approach always yields results, evident by his recent infiltration of the Coalition. Thanks to Ash’s skills and the help of his team, they finally put an end to the murdering extremist group for good, though not before Ash takes a bullet to save teammate Cael Maddock. As a result, Ash’s secrets start to surface, and he can no longer ignore what’s in his heart.

Cael Maddock is no stranger to heartache. As a Recon Agent for Destructive Delta, he has successfully maneuvered through the urban jungle that is New York City, picking up his own scars along the way. Yet nothing he’s ever faced has been more of a challenge than the heart of Ash Keeler, his supposedly straight teammate. Being in love isn’t the only danger he and Ash face as wounds reopen and new secrets emerge, forcing them to question old loyalties.

CommonExcerpt

At one point, Ash felt Cael’s leg pressed up against his, and it was ridiculous how happy the tiny gesture made him. If it was even a gesture. Ash swiftly put it off to being an accident, but then a little later, Cael reached over and wiped a thumb over the corner of Ash’s mouth, telling him he had a breadcrumb.

“You should have seen him,” Dex said with a laugh. “He looked so adorable with his cheetah fuzz shaped into spikes, from his head down to his back. Like a little spotted punk rocker.”

Maddock shook his head at Dex. “It took me two hours to wash all the hair spray off your brother’s fur.”

“We were pretending to be Guns N’ Roses,” Cael explained. “Dex was singing ‘Welcome to the Jungle,’ and I was backup sing—er, chirping.”

Ash laughed and playfully bumped Cael’s shoulder. “I’m going to have to agree with Dex. That’s adorable.” Even in his Therian form, Ash thought Cael was the sweetest thing he’d ever laid eyes on. Cael could be in his Therian form among thousands of cheetahs, and Ash would be able to point him out. His little gestures, the heart shape of his nose, or the way he chirped away, as if anyone not in their Therian form might understand him if he tried hard enough.

Dex grabbed Sloane’s arm. “Tell me you recorded that. Doesn’t matter. I have witnesses.” Dex stood and motioned to all of them. “Witnesses! You all heard it. Ash said he agrees with me.”

“Oh, good Lord. We’re never going to hear the end of this,” Maddock sighed, getting up to clear the dishes.

“Do you realize how epic this moment is?” Dex said, helping clear up.

“It’s not really that epic,” Maddock replied.

Dex let out an exaggerated gasp. “Where have you been living? Ash Keeler has agreed with something I, Dexter J. Daley, has said.”

“About your brother being adorable. Not exactly earthshattering. He’s thought that since they met.”

The table fell into silence as they all gaped at Maddock. Well, this was news to Ash. What the hell? Seeming to notice the quiet, or more likely the lack of Dex talking, Maddock looked up.

“What are you, fish? Close your mouths.”

Four mouths promptly closed.

“It’s not rocket science. I’ve known that boy since he joined, and he’s threatened every agent he’s ever met with kicking their ass. Except for Cael.”

Hard to argue with that. It was the truth.

Dex frowned at Ash. “You threatened to kick Hobbs’s ass?”

Ash nodded. “Yep.” Was it his first week of being on the job? He was pretty sure it was the first week.

“Dude, that’s not cool. Hobbs is awesome.”

“He can also be a pain in the ass. Plus when we first met, I didn’t know he had selective mutism. I asked him a question, and he wouldn’t answer me. He’d whisper to Calvin, who’d answer for him. I got pissed off and told him if he didn’t tell me himself, I’d kick his ass.” Ash had never met a tiger Therian as big and insecure as Hobbs. The whole encounter had left him confused. Here was their new demolitions expert, and he couldn’t talk. How the fuck was he going to communicate with his team? Ash wasn’t proud to admit he’d had a shit fit. He understood the THIRDS was about equality and representation when it came to hiring, but he had been genuinely concerned about the safety of his team. Not long after, Ash had seen how wrong he’d been about Hobbs. Not that he’d admitted it.

Dex let out a sound of disgust. “Dude, not cool.”

“I said I didn’t know. I apologized afterward, and that’s saying something.”

Ash got up to help clear the dishes, with Dex going on about how he should really think about using some of those scented candles Rosa had gifted him. Ash proceeded to flip him off.

When Cael stood to help, Ash put a hand to his shoulder.

“Relax, I’ve got this.”

He gave Cael a wink and walked the dirty dishes to the kitchen with Dex yammering on behind him. The guy was like a fucking mosquito buzzing in your ear and trying to suck the life out of you. Ash placed the dishes in the dishwasher, giving grunts and one-word replies. He grabbed the dishes from Dex and put those in as well. He wished he could stick Dex in there. Finally someone up there decided to give him a break, and Dex left the kitchen, singing some stupid song about a lion sleeping tonight or something.

Ash frowned at Maddock. “Does he never shut up? How the hell did you live with this for so long?”

“It’s called patience,” Maddock replied. “Not exactly your forte.”

“Oh, I can be patient. That’s not what’s required when dealing with your oldest. I’d say sedative is more the word you were looking for.”

Maddock laughed. “Just get in there, Keeler.”

Guest Author—Anne Barwell Talks Family and Reflection

Please welcome, Anne Barwell to the Land of Make Believe today. Anne comes to visit from New Zealand and is here to talk about her newest release, Family and Reflection.

Another Perspective

Thanks, Andrew, for hosting me.

Family and Reflection, book 3 of The Sleepless City—the urban fantasy series which is a joint project between myself and Elizabeth Noble—reintroduces a character from book 1, Shades of Sepia. Ange Duncan, Ben’s friend from New Zealand, visits Flint, Ohio, and stays with the guys at Boggs’s Castle.

Why bring her into this book when it is Lucas and Declan’s story?

There are a couple of reasons for it.

Firstly she’s a strong female character and I like those in my MM stories. It’s one of the reasons Anita, Lucas’s sister, plays a decent role in this story too. Given what the guys are dealing with in this story, I wanted some light relief. Having someone stay who has no idea what they are—vampires and a werewolf—means that, as well as trying to solve a case and everything that goes with it, they also have to keep their ‘secret identities’ secret.

That’s the plan anyway… Most humans who find out about the supernatural world that lies beneath their own do so by accident or, like Ben, because they become involved with someone who is a part of it. It was a nice change to have someone else in the mix who wasn’t a part of their world. Besides, it was also only a matter of time before someone from Ben’s immediate family or his best friend turned up in Flint to check up on him. Why not combine it with everything else going on? There’s no fun in making life too easy for our heroes, after all. Right?

The other reason I introduced her was because it ties in nicely with the timeline for my Outliers series set in Wellington. Ange is one of the characters from that series about a group with psi powers which I’ll be writing once I’ve wrapped up my current series in progress. During the first book she’s away so it made sense that she’d be visiting Flint.

Blurb: Family and Reflection

Book 3 of The Sleepless City, Sequel to Electric Candle

FamilyandreflectionFor as long as Lucas Coate can remember, werewolves have been taught to mistrust vampires. Lucas is an exception—he has close friends who are vampires. The werewolf pack in Flint—and their leader, Jacob Coate—have made it clear that Lucas’s association with vampires is barely tolerated, and another transgression will be his last. When Lucas finds out about the plague of werewolf deaths in the area, he wants to help even though his own life may already be in danger.

Declan has been away from Flint for ten years, but he isn’t surprised to learn that the internal politics of the Supernatural Council haven’t changed for the better. When a series of burglaries hit close to home soon after he arrives, Declan—a vampire and professional thief—is their prime suspect, although for once, he isn’t responsible. With the council keeping secrets, no one is safe. Time is running out, and for Lucas and Declan, everything is about to change.

Excerpt:

Declan turned the page of his book, read the first paragraph, then shook his head. He wasn’t sure why he’d bothered, as he couldn’t for the life of him remember what had happened on the previous page, let alone in the last few chapters. He closed the book with a thump, got up from the table, went over to the fridge, and opened it.

He wasn’t hungry, but if he had been, the mold-covered plate on one of the shelves would have put him off whatever else had taken his fancy. Someone really needed to have a word with Lucas about leaving his science experiments to breed. Declan lifted the plate somewhat cautiously and sniffed it, then wished he hadn’t. City coroner or not, this wasn’t… normal. Normal people cleaned out their leftovers before they got the chance to become strange new life forms.

Even if, in this case, his definition of normal was a werewolf.

But, despite his reaction, Declan couldn’t bring himself to throw the—whatever it was—away. To him it was disgusting, but to Lucas it might be some new discovery crucial to whatever he was currently working on. And Declan didn’t want to upset Lucas. In the short time they’d known each other, he’d become quite fond of Lucas, and enjoyed the time they spent together.

Declan sighed. He returned the offending thing to its previous resting place, ignoring the visions of reanimated zombie leftovers creeping up the stairs to attack him in the middle of the night, and instead got a wineglass out of the cupboard. He poured himself a decent-sized portion of his favorite red beverage and settled back down on the chair he’d recently vacated. As much as he enjoyed a good vintage wine, there were times when one had to quench one’s other thirsts. He sniffed the glass and savored the aroma before swallowing.

Hmm, not bad. It was amazing the standard of blood available to purchase through the right sources. It made it so much easier to feed than it used to be, and less messy too.

He heard the light step on the stairs and human heartbeat long before Ben reached the kitchen and stood awkwardly in the doorway.

“Hello, Ben,” Declan said. “Don’t worry, you’re not disturbing me.”

“If you’re sure?” Ben Leyton ran one hand through his thick dark hair. He looked tired. “I couldn’t sleep, so I thought I’d make a Milo and see if that helps.”

“I heard Simon having a nightmare earlier. He never did sleep well on anniversaries.” He’d known Simon Hawthorne a long time; Jonas Forge had introduced them shortly after Simon had been turned. Declan had also helped Simon through a dark part of his life, triggered by the events he suspected had prompted this particular nightmare, given the time of year. “I also don’t mind if you turn on the light.”

Although Declan didn’t need much light to see, especially with the full moon casting its glow into the room, Ben would appreciate more illumination.

“Yeah, well, they’re the worst times for most people, I guess.” Ben flicked on the light switch before walking across the kitchen. He filled the kettle and put it on to boil before reaching into the cupboard and bringing down a green can. “Do you want some? It’s a chocolate drink.”

“Thank you but no.” Declan indicated the glass in front of him.

The loud howl almost made him jump, and only years of practiced self-control stopped him. Even so, Declan’s hairs stood on end on the back of his neck, and the howl sent a shiver through him.

Lucas howled again. Frustration, anger, and loss all rolled into a sound that was pure wolf.

Declan knocked his glass over, spilling its contents. Without thinking, he moved at vampire speed, catching what was left of the blood in his palm and drinking deeply.

The glass fell to the floor, smashing into tiny pieces. He ignored it and finished the blood, then wiped the back of his hand across his mouth. A low growl escaped his lips. He knew his eyes were completely green. They tended to do that when his fangs extended.

When he looked up, Ben was staring at him, his eyes wide. “I’ll clean up the mess, shall I?” Ben said hurriedly, already heading for the broom.

“Don’t worry,” Declan said. “I’ll do it. Make your chocolate drink, mon ami. It’s my mess, so my responsibility, yes?”

About the Author:

Anne Barwell lives in Wellington, New Zealand. She shares her home with two cats who are convinced that the house is run to suit them; this is an ongoing “discussion,” and to date it appears as though the cats may be winning.

In 2008 she completed her conjoint BA in English Literature and Music/Bachelor of Teaching. She has worked as a music teacher, a primary school teacher, and now works in a library. She is a member of the Upper Hutt Science Fiction Club and plays violin for Hutt Valley Orchestra.

She is an avid reader across a wide range of genres and a watcher of far too many TV series and movies, although it can be argued that there is no such thing as “too many.” These, of course, are best enjoyed with a decent cup of tea and further the continuing argument that the concept of “spare time” is really just a myth.

Anne’s books have twice received honorable mentions and twice reached the finals in the Rainbow Awards.

An Interview with Jeff Erno—Speedy Rewards Blog Tour and Giveaway

Today I get to interview someone whose work I’ve admired for some time, but never met. Jeff Erno has a new release with Wayward Ink Publishing—Speedy Rewards—and he’s agreed to stop by and talk about himself and his work. And at the end, he’s giving away stuff so read on to find out more.

Interview:

Welcome Jeff, let’s start with you telling readers a little about yourself.

First of all, thank you for hosting me on your blog and for participating in the Speedy Rewards Blog Tour and Giveaway Contest. I really appreciate your hospitality and the promotional opportunity you’ve provided. Continue reading An Interview with Jeff Erno—Speedy Rewards Blog Tour and Giveaway

No More Hiding; by Renee Stevens—Author Interview

Please welcome my friend Renee to the Land of Make Believe. I first met Renee on the Gay Authors Website and I’ve been a fan of her work of five years now.  Her new release—No More Hiding—is now available from Dreamspinner Press and she’s stopped by to talk about herself, her writing and her new book.

Welcome Renee. We’ve known each other for a while, but start by telling everyone else a bit about yourself.

Oh boy, time to talk about myself. Ok then. I live in Wyoming with my husband and our house typically is like a zoo with 3 dogs and 3 cats. I spend most of my time outdoors when the weather is good, especially camping. I got into writing as a teenager but didn’t do much with it until I hit my twenties. I read just about everything, contemporary, paranormal, sci-fi, and a few others. I like sewing quilts, but I have to be in the right mood to sit at the sewing machine for hours at a time. Other than that, I spend most of my time being a homemaker and writing.

This is a fun time for you, your new book, No More Hiding, is officially available for purchase. What was it like when Dreamspinner Press said, ‘why yes, Renee, we’d like to publish your book?’

I still remember opening my email and seeing the words “Contract Offer: No More Hiding”. I was seriously in shock. I couldn’t believe it and just stared at the words for a minute before finally opening it. I think I re-read that email like 3 times to make sure I wasn’t imagining things and then I called my husband. I was so excited once it finally sunk in.

Your first stories were posted for free on-line. Talk about how that was for you.

It’s been great. Not only have I got some awesome feedback from it, but I’ve also met so many wonderful people. I wouldn’t be where I am with my writing without them, as they’ve helped me learn where I need to improve.

You write in different genres, which ones and which is your favorite?

I mainly write contemporary and paranormal. I actually really enjoy writing vampire and shifter stories. There are so many “legends” about both and it’s fun to play with them. I think the hardest thing is there are so many cliché’s with both genres and if I want to veer off the path that is generally acceptable, I have to figure a way to explain it.

Okay, let’s talk No More Hiding. What’s it about?

My main character Phillip tried to play the straight life by getting married. Unfortunately, it didn’t work out. His ex-wife eventually learns why their marriage didn’t work out, and takes their two kids, despite Phillip actually winning custody. Phillip has spent the last six years looking for his children, with no luck.

For those 6 years he hasn’t really lived his life and his brother Robert has decided enough is enough. They will never stop looking for the kids, but Phillip needs to start living again. Robert tells him about a new gym that has opened up and Phillip ends up meeting Vance.

Phillip and Vance face many obstacles in starting a relationship, the biggest one being Phillip needing to tell him about his kids. The question remains on whether or not Vance will be able to accept it and whether they will be able to work through the different obstacles they face.

Who are the main characters?

The main characters would most likely be considered Vance and Phillip. Vance is an attorney and Phillip is an accountant. Both of them are very down to earth and both have suffered from emotional upheavals in their lives.

I also consider Robert to be a main character. He’s Phillip’s twin brother and has a major role throughout the book. He works in construction. I think I can honestly say that Robert is my favorite character in this book for the simple fact that he supports Phillip no matter what. Throughout the story, he’s there; no matter what is going on, Phillip can count on Robert.

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

There were a few parts that were fun, but for the most part I’d say the interactions between Phillip and his brother Robert. There are a few humorous parts throughout the book where you can watch Phillip and Robert banter back and forth or try to get one over on each other.

What part made you struggle them most?

Any part having to deal with Phillip’s kids. It was hard to get the emotions right and there were so many times that I had a hard time writing it because I couldn’t hardly see through the tears.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

Herm, something interesting not in the blurb, preferably without giving away any plot surprises. Trevor, who Phillip meets at the gym, is a bit of a character. He constantly colors his hair different colors and isn’t afraid to say what he’s thinking. He also seems to have some sort of connection to Vance that Phillip just can’t seem to figure out, but it does cause him a few moments of worry.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Right now I’m working on revising my vampire novel, Joined by Blood. I’m hoping to submit it within the next couple of months. Other than that, I’m working on a military story called Thwarted as well as a collection of flash fiction stories.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

There’s not really a specific story that I’ve been reading. For the last few days I’ve been reading all the of “Don’t Read In The Closet” stories that are put out by the Goodreads group M/M Romance. Most of them are short stories and there are definitely a few gems amongst all the stories. I think just about everyone could find something they enjoy within all the currently posted stories.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Tough question. I’m assuming it doesn’t have to be someone famous. I’ve already met my fellow author Alicia Nordwell, and it was great. I think the next fellow author I’d like to meet is Mann Ramblings, author of The Luxorian Fugitive. Not only do I enjoy his work, but we’ve also become great friends who talk on a near daily basis. Unfortunately, we live far away from each other, so it’s doubtful we’d ever actually get to meet in person.

What’s a fun – non-writing – day for you?

It depends on the day, and the season. If it’s winter, and cold outside, then I like to spend my time sewing quilts. If it’s summer, my favorite thing to do is go camping, fishing, and four-wheeling. My husband and I take the dogs and just go have fun and relax in the great outdoors.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

There are two questions I get asked all the time. One is about how I got into writing M/M romance. That one is an easy question because it all started when I read a book by Sara Bell called “The Magic In Your Touch”. I really enjoyed the story and thought at the time that maybe I should give it a try. My first story, Eternity, is a bit rough and in the future I may revise it, but after writing that, I just kept going.

The other question I get asked all the time is about women writing M/M romance and what my stance on it is. Considering I’m a woman myself, obviously I don’t have issues with it. But lately I’ve been thinking about this a lot. As far as I’m concerned, why shouldn’t women write M/M romance? People write about stuff all the time that they couldn’t have possibly experienced. Paranormal stories, sci-fi stories, fantasy, and M/M romance have one thing in common. Research, research, research. Whether it’s from doing a lot of reading, talking to people, or searching on the internet for answers. As long as an author is willing to put the time in to research something and the story is good, it shouldn’t matter who writes it.

No More Hiding:

NoMoreHidingFSPhillip Jorgensen tried to live the straight life and ended up divorced. But he wouldn’t trade his two kids, Jacob and Samantha, for the world. “I’m sorry, I have to go. I forgot… I just… I have some stuff I have to do.”

“Want me to go with you?”

Phillip glanced up and grimaced at the frown on Vance’s lips. He tried to force a smile but probably failed completely. “Thanks, but no. This is something I have to do by myself.”

“Listen, if it’s about what I said….”

“It’s not.” Phillip shook his head. He’d been trying to tell himself that they were only friends—workout buddies—but Vance’s earlier words about dating came back to him. He’d been right. Phillip sighed. He needed time to think without the distraction of Vance. He’d only known him a month, and he’d already forgotten his kids. That wasn’t acceptable. Jacob and Samantha had to be his first priority.

“Phillip?”

The sound of his name jerked him from his thoughts, and Vance stepped toward him. He stepped back, keeping distance between them.

“Enjoy your swim.” He turned and fled into the locker room. Hopefully Vance wouldn’t follow until he could get changed and leave.

He ignored the showers and hurried to his locker. He stripped out of his suit and slithered into his clothes, not caring about the water that still clung to his skin. He heard the door to the pool open and started shoving his things into his bag.

“You could have kept swimming.” He didn’t look at Vance as he stepped into the row of lockers. Guilt ate at him for not only having forgotten Sam’s birthday, but for ruining Vance’s day as well.

“Could have. Didn’t want to.”

Phillip straightened, unable to keep from looking at Vance as he leaned against his locker scrutinizing him, his brow furrowed. Phillip searched for words to explain his behavior but came up empty.

You could try the truth.

About the Author:

Renee Stevens first started writing in her teens but didn’t get serious about being an author until her mid-twenties. Since then she’s written a number of contemporary stories, as well as delved into the paranormal. When not writing, or spending time in the outdoors, Renee can usually be found working on GayAuthors.org in her capacity of admin and Anthology Coordinator.

Renee resides in Wyoming with her wonderfully supportive husband and a menagerie of four-legged critters. Making the most of the nearly constant negative temperatures and mounds of snow, Renee spends much of the winter months in hibernation with her laptop, the voices in her head keeping her company while her husband works. When she needs a break from writing, Renee takes to the sewing machine to design, and make, beautiful quilts.

When the snow finally disappears, usually around May or June, Renee can be found in the great-outdoors. She spends her time on the mountain, at the lake, and just anywhere that she can do some camping, take some photos, and ride the four-wheelers with her hubby. Once back at home, it’s back to writing.

An Interview With Nikka Michaels and Eileen Griffin—Authors of “In the Distance”

Today I get to welcome back the duo of Nikka Michaels and Eileen Griffin. They agreed to let me interview and talk about their newest release, In the Distance. So with that, let’s get started:

Welcome Nikka and Eileen. You’ve been guests before, but remind folks who you are.

Eileen: Hi Andrew! Thanks so much for having us on your blog today! Most people probably don’t know this, but I was lucky enough to meet you at GRL last year. Hearing about your adorable daughter and stealing a dance from you at the party on the last night was an absolute highlight for me J For those who don’t know me, I’m Eileen Griffin and have been writing M/M romance for about two years now. I live in Texas, but I’m happiest when I’m traveling abroad.

Nikka: Hi Andrew! Thanks again for having us on your blog. I haven’t been as lucky as my lovely co-writer Eileen in meeting you in person yet, but hopefully one day! I’ve been writing romance, both solo and co-writing with Eileen for almost two years. I live in weird and wonderful Oregon.

Many of us have written with a co-author for a book or two, but you both are a writing team. Can you tell us a bit how that works?

Eileen: Nikka and I have both written individual works (Nik more so than I have), but we love plotting, outlining, and writing longer stories together. Writing is such a solitary endeavor that it’s comforting to have someone with you throughout the process who shares your ups and downs, your frustrations and triumphs, and who loves your characters as much as you do. As far as how we work together: we both work on the outline by chatting online while we’re outlining since we live in different states, then we typically alternate writing different chapters/characters.

Nikka: There’s something immensely satisfying writing solo but I really love writing as a team. Eileen is definitely the organizational backbone of our duo and is the master plotter and outliner. She keeps us both on track when we start writing and without her outlines I’d be adrift. I agree with her about co-writing keeping us sane. We love the worlds we’ve created and getting the chance to work with her on a daily basis is an honor.

How many books have you written together? Which was the first?

Eileen: Altogether, we’ve co-written five books with Chasing Matt as our first work as a writing duo.

Okay, let’s talk In the Distance. What’s it about?

In the Distance is about two guys, Tyler and Trevor, who are introduced in Book Two of our In the Kitchen Series, In the Fire. Book Two focuses on Tyler being taken under Ethan’s wing (a head chef and one of the MCs in the first two books) after being kicked out of his parents’ house and forced to live on the streets. Trevor, on the opposite end of the spectrum, comes from old money and a good family but almost loses his friendship with Jamie (the other MC of Books One and Two) when he tries to sabotage Jamie’s and Ethan’s relationship. Tyler and Trevor get thrown together in In the Distance and have to navigate the waters of their two completely different worlds and family lives as they discover and act on the growing attraction between them.

Who are the main characters?

Tyler Mitchell: a twenty-year old from Seattle who was homeless and on the streets before Ethan took him under his wing and gave him a job at his restaurant. He’s currently a student at the Culinary Institute of Seattle.

Trevor Pratt: a thirty year-old from New York, Jamie’s best friend, and a total player in the singles scene because he’s anti-commitment after almost losing his best friend (and one-sided love interest for eight years). Trevor is an entertainment manager who doesn’t need to work, hence his lovely nickname of “Trustfund”, but loves what he does and takes pride in doing the best job he can do for his clients.

What part of the book was the most fun to write and why?

Eileen: Nik and I have different answers for this one. My favorite part to write was toward the end of the book when Trevor has to work to earn back Tyler’s trust. There’s a scene where Tyler is working at a community garden and Trevor surprises him there. The truth is Trevor screws up royally in Book Two, In the Fire, and a lot of readers didn’t like him. However, Nikka and I saw beneath his spoiled exterior. For years, Trevor just wanted to find the kind of love that lasts a lifetime. He thought he had found that with Jamie, but Jamie’s heart had always belonged to Ethan. In this garden scene, I wanted to give the readers a view of Trevor’s softer, more vulnerable side, and allow them to see that he wasn’t such a bad guy, after all.

Nikka: My favorite scene was the confrontation between a highly inebriated Trevor and Ethan from In the Raw and In the Fire. I can hear Eileen laughing as she knows that I was relishing writing this scene even before we began the first chapter. These two have a history and they both care about Tyler in different ways, so watching them face off was glorious.

What part made you struggle the most?

Eileen: I think I speak for both of us when I say the hardest scene to write/get through was when Tyler sees his parents again after two long years. We wrote things a parent should never say to their child (or anyone, for that matter) and we had to take breaks while writing it because our hearts were breaking with each word we typed.

Nikka: I second that. Tyler isn’t a child anymore, but no one should have to deal with the type of abandonment and verbal abuse that his parents heaped on him. Love is love, in all its forms and parents have a responsibility to love their kids for all that makes them unique.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

Both men grow up emotionally in this story, but Tyler also gains an inner strength he didn’t know he had. After being abandoned by his parents, Tyler is terrified of disappointing his friends and bosses. I think we’re all a little bit like Tyler when we’re young. Sometimes others want for us isn’t always what we want for ourselves, and yet we put our dreams on the back burner for fear of hurting the ones we love with what we (stupidly) think are selfish whims.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Eileen: Together, we’ve already outlined and started writing the second book in our Cooper Mountain Series, and we’re working on the outline for Book Four of the In the Kitchen Series. Individually, I’m working on a solo piece that is more RomCom-ish than angsty.

Nikka: In addition to the co-written books Eileen mentioned, I’m working on a short story featuring a pastry chef reunited with his old flame.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

Eileen: Ooooh! I have soooo many favorites in the M/M genre! The THRDS Series by Charlie Cochet and the Whyborne and Griffin Series by Jordan Hawk are two of my all-time favorite series, but I’d also have to recommend the Don’t Series by Jack Pyke. Fair warning, they’re dark and gritty and difficult to read at times, but they’re beyond fantastic 🙂

Nikka Michaels: If you’re a fan of space operas and speculative fiction, the Chaos Station series by fellow Carina Press writing duo Kelly Jensen and Jenn Burke is awesome. Chaos Station and Lonely Shore are out now with three more titles to come and I cannot wait.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Eileen: Wow. That’s a hard one. I’d have to say William Shakespeare. There’s so much controversy surrounding who he really was, where was he during those missing years between when he left Stratford and when he arrived on the scene in London, and whether he was he some fictitious entity created by a nobleman to cover up the indecency of someone of noble birth writing dramas. Plus, the crowd he supposedly hung out with was a wild one, so I’m sure we’d have a pretty damn good time in the tavern while we talked. 🙂

Nikka Michaels: I’d meet my lovely co-writer who I’ve never had the pleasure of meeting in real life. Even after two years of writing together, countless phone calls, chats and web meetings I’d love to give her a hug in person.

What’s a fun – non-writing – day for you?

Eileen: I’m kind of boring, so this is my “OMG – THIS IS MY PERFECT NON-WRITING DAY!!!” (SHOUTY CAPS are totally necessary to convey how excited I would be to have this day.) I would wake up late (I’m usually up by 5:30 or 6), have my coffee in peace and quiet while I read for an hour, go get a pedicure with an extra-long massage, then meet some friends for drinks and dinner (most likely Tex-Mex, Indian, or Thai) and then curling up in bed with a glass of wine and my Kindle so I could read until I finally fell asleep. A realistic fun day is more likely going to Target (god, I love that store), getting to read without being interrupted, and having dinner out so I don’t have to worry about prepping, cooking, or cleaning. 🙂

Nikka: Eileen is definitely not boring but I’m going with her idea. A perfect non-writing day is sleeping in, drinking coffee as I read in the morning, a lazy day doing a Netflix marathon after a good meal with friends would all be a part of my perfect day.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

Eileen: I just wanted to say thank you to all of our readers. I think, as writers, we put our hearts and souls into our books and hope there will be people out there who will love the finished product as much as we do. To have people ping us on Twitter or FB with how much they enjoyed reading out books makes all the late nights, early mornings, editing sessions, and revising jags worth it.

Nikka: I second what Eileen said so eloquently. Thank you, if you’re reading our books and thank you for stopping by Andrew’s blog to find out about In the Distance. We love creating the world within the In the Kitchen series and it’s still very surreal to think that people are reading our words. Without readers, bloggers, reviewers, fellow authors, friends and the Carina Press family we’d never be able to get this opportunity and it’s much appreciated.

Thank you both for being my guest today!

In the Distance

In the Distance

Because sometimes it takes some distance to finally see what’s right in front of you…

Tyler Mitchell has worked hard to rebuild his life after his family kicked him out. A culinary student and sous chef who spends his spare time volunteering with kids, he’s happy enough even though he has no time to consider a relationship.

Trevor Pratt is finally getting over losing his best friend and the one person he wanted to spend the rest of his life with, but it’s taken screwing every cute guy in Manhattan to get there. He’s vowed to repair the friendship he endangered, but that’s hard to do when his friend’s new employee catches his eye. Despite being warned to stay away from Tyler, Trevor knows the sous chef is more than just a hookup.

Romance is a terrible idea. Trevor is ten years older and a relentless playboy. Tyler is still unsure of his place in the world. Neither of them is ready for life-changing love, but as things heat up, their chemistry in the bedroom might just take that decision out of their hands.

Series: In the Kitchen, Book 3

Release Date: June 15, 2015

Publisher: Carina Press

Excerpt:

I threw him a dirty look over my shoulder as we walked out of the diner. “Okay. So I might have had my dad’s Platinum AmEx card to help me out, but I struggled just like the rest of my classmates.”

Tyler’s low, deep laugh hit me in all the right, and wrong, places. “Poor baby. I’m sure it was hard to choose between the double shot extra whip latte and the regular Joe Blow latte.”

God, it was good to hear him laugh. “Hey now. Leave my double shot latte out of this,” I shot back as I unlocked the doors to the Mercedes coupe I’d rented.

His laughter slowly faded as I pulled out of the parking lot. I had only been to Ethan’s old place a few times when Jamie had first moved back to Seattle and before they had bought a new condo together. But Tyler made sure to keep me on the right track with directions, his voice getting softer and softer the closer we got to the apartment.

I pulled up to the curb, letting the car idle instead of parking and walking him to his door. As much as I found myself not wanting the night to end, it wouldn’t have been smart to push whatever this was. Anyone else? We’d already be upstairs with Tyler’s pants around his ankles and my mouth on him. But he wasn’t just anyone else.

Tyler, who had been staring out his window, slowly turned toward me. The soft lights of the dash barely illuminated his face. God, he looked young, innocent and worth every ounce of protectiveness he brought out in the people who cared about him.

“Thanks for the ride. And dinner. It was nice.”

He turned again and reached for the door handle.

“Hey, Tyler. Wait up.”

Author Interview: Alex A. Akira. Dojo Boys: Dragon and Crow Blog Tour and Giveaway

Today please welcome Alex Akira. As part of the Dragon and Crow blog tour, Alex agreed to let me interview him. He’s definitely not your cookie cutter MM Romance novelist, so take a moment to read the interview and then be sure to enter the giveaway for a chance to win one of three (3) $25.00 gift cards and seven (7) copies of the series.

Author Interview: Alex A. Akira, Author of Dojo Boys.

Welcome Alex, please tell everyone a bit about yourself.

Hi Andrew, thank you for this opportunity. Um, I’m not used to talking about myself, but I’ll give it a shot. I’m Native American. I’m an artist, and have drawn and written pretty much all of my life, but never wrote to publish until my Dojo Boys series. I’m an orphan, no living family, but I am lucky to have a tight group of intimate friends who lend me support when I need it. I’m passionate about anything creative and love learning and as a result I am a jack-of-all-trades creative-wise. For most of my life I’ve worked in the creative design industry. Let’s move to the next question because I am starting to bore myself.

You like martial arts. What discipline do you practice and how long have you been doing them?

Shotokan karate is my central martial art, but I’ve been in the game a while, so have picked up some other disciplines as well; some judo and jujitsu. For me the metaphysics behind martial practice, the discipline of strengthening ones emotions and chi though meditation and observation, are the most applicable part of martial study. As a rule, no one gets in a physical fight every day, but you do face conflict and choices daily. The practice of observing and confronting mental and emotional conflict truthfully, coupled with the physical movement of the sport is the discipline needed to win a fight without ever throwing a punch. If a physical fight becomes unavoidable, the fight is very short. That said I have physical practice daily, I am in fact married to my sensei.

Before we discuss Dojo Boys, let’s start with what is yaoi and what drew you to it?

Yaoi is a sexually explicit form of Japanese manga (comic book) or anime, (animated film) which focuses upon beautiful, troubled young men who are attracted to other beautiful men. You’ll notice I’m not using the words “gay” here, and that is because the characters in yaoi are not necessarily gay. In fact the idea of homosexuality was foreign to Japan until its interaction with Western concepts in in the mid 1800’s. The principal figure in yaoi is the bishōunen (beautiful boy), who has long represented the epitome of male beauty in Japanese culture.

Yaoi stories generally feature a “seme”, a pursuer or top and a “uke”, a shy or reluctant bottom who is the object of the chase. The narratives of yaoi stories can vary from contemporary to the fantastic, including the paranormal. Its characters can be schoolboys, salarymen, crimefighters, actors, dancers, spies, demon hunters, well pretty much anyone. While yaoi may appear to be simply raunchy stories with erotic images, the history behind its central figure, the bishōunen and the practice of romanticized male/male sex has a long history in Japan. I’ve written a series of posts on the subject for the Dragon & Crow blog hop and invite anyone whose interest is sparked by this topic to follow those posts.

I became interested in the yaoi genre when I stumbled across the anime “My Sexual Harassment” which relays the sexual relationship between a male boss and his young male employee. I loved with this stylish anime and afterwards discovered yaoi manga, then slash and yaoi fan fiction. From there it was a short jump from reading yaoi to writing it.

Talk about Dojo Boys. How many books are in the series and are there more planned?

Dojo Boys is a yaoi romance action-adventure series. The books relay the story of a vigilante-founded espionage agency and the love lives of its agents. In writing the series I strived to capture the simple/complex nuances that appear in Japanese yaoi, but also maintain the parameters of the American male/male romance fiction genre.

Currently there are five books, 3 of which are published and 2 volumes, which will be released in September. I’m also working on an anthology of short Dojo Boys stories, which I’ve temporarily named Dojo Boys: The Lost Chapters. That book will includes stories inspired by my fans questions. In fact the 2 volumes to be released in September were written in response to readers wanting to know more about one of the supporting characters in Dragon and Crow. After the anthology there will be another full 2-volume story that will escalate the action seen in the previous books; a “big mission” which will involve all the players from the previous books.

I understand Dragon and the Crow is newly revised and re-released as a 2-volume box set with your illustrations included. Tell us about the story and your main characters Michael Black and Kiyoshi Kimura.

Yes, the initial 2–volumes in the series, Dragon and Crow and its prequel, The First Misunderstanding, have both been rewritten from my original manuscript of several years ago. I’ve grown as a writer and wanted the books to reflect that growth, but also there are entire new parts included in the current books.

Ah, Michael and Kiyoshi are the main love interests in Dragon and Crow. It’s two Volumes relay Michael Black’s story; how in doing a favor for his sensei his life gets turned on its end. He’s just turned twenty-three and falls in love with a mysterious stranger, Kiyoshi Kimura, who he met because they had a fight in Michael’s dojo one night. Kiyoshi is a beautiful, gifted, nineteen-year-old of Japanese and Korean descent, but it soon becomes apparent that he’s got some major mental and emotional baggage. In trying to help both his sensei and Kiyoshi, Michael ends up involved in a war between the Japanese Yakuza, the Kimura family and a vigilante organization known as the Tanaka Group.

There is also a second couple in this story, Michael’s sensei, Ichiro Kimura and his ex lover, Detective Masato Takahashi struggle to overcome their past as they work together with Michael to bring down the Yakuza crime lord who is semi-responsible for Kiyoshi’s problems. The ten-chapter prequel, The First Misunderstanding, reveals how Sensei Kimura and Detective Takahashi first met while attending high school, in Japan.

What inspired you to write this book?

At its core, Dragon and Crow is a “jock falls in love” story. Kyudo (archery), judo and karate are Japan’s traditional sports not, say … golf and baseball which were imported to Japan’s culture. In yaoi schoolboy tales you find the underclassmen eyeing the practitioners of Kyudo (archery) and judo much like the American high school nerd gazes at the quarterback of the school’s football team. I wanted to explore this type of relationship… what is the life of a student of martial arts like. How do they approach love and the lovestruck?

I was also I was inspired by yaoi manga like Asami Tohjoh’s ‘Only You’, where a high school judo captain must recruit new members or his judo club will be shut down. He tries to recruit another top judo player and sex becomes the only bribe that entices the other player to join the club. Plus, I’m a martial artist with a dojo of karate players, we share stories and so the imagination runs and I write.

Tell us something not in the blurb.

The story is situated in America, Connecticut actually, but the action, especially in Volume two, covers a lot of locations, the dojo, theaters, nightclubs, casinos, New York, Japan and Argentina and more.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Besides the Dojo Boys series, I’m writing a yaoi android book, Doll Drone, a drug dealer-college student action-romance called Sweet and I’ve got a department store-company VP romance on my back burner. Oh I almost forgot Smithy, my webepisode series about a yahoo from the Midwest who gets scouted by a modeling agency. He discovers his mother, who raised him, is in a witness protection program. Smithy’s modeling job unintentially exposes his mother and soon he is using his international modeling gigs to track down her killers. This series of short stories will be appearing monthly on my website starting in September.

What do you like to read?

I’ll try pretty much anything that is fiction; I like to go where an author takes me. But I love the mythical heroic fantasy of David Gemmell and vigilante/assassin crime thrillers like Andrew Vachss’ Burke series and even Barry Eisler’s “Rain” series.

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

The initial pouring out of the story and the deep editing of word choice … you know, finding the exact word to capture what you are trying to convey.

What’s your least favorite?

Outlining, because it is still difficult for me to place the story in this form and resist writing the scene… I try to write a sentence and my fingers just keep tapping the keyboard…

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

I just reread Miyamoto Musashi’s Book of Five Rings for like the tenth time, and recommend it highly, even if a reader isn’t into martial arts.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

David Gemmell or Andrew Vachss, they are wonderful at capturing atmosphere and character. I love their style and would love to meet them. Sadly David has passed.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Drawing and painting, running, martial arts, rock climbing and sex… once in a while I cook.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

I hope you read and enjoy my books and thank you for reading this interview.

Thanks for hosting me Andrew it’s been a pleasure.

Excerpt

D-&-C-VOL-1-800X1200-COVERMichael groped for the light switch, a smile of triumph playing at his lips. Damn, I did it! I beat him! Flicking the switch, he turned, eager to view his skilled opponent and to bask in the accolades that he was sure to receive from Sensei Kimura.

His triumph descended to dismay in a flash. Who the hell is this?

A slight figure lay crumpled at the center of the practice room. Cautiously approaching the limp form, Michael’s heart sank even further. Lying unconscious on the gleaming bamboo floor was a Japanese boy. He looked to be about five-foot-seven, was very pale, and quite young.

“A kid? I beat up a kid?” Quickening his pace, Michael knelt beside the slim figure. Jesus, he’s like fourteen, fifteen? Beautiful. He looks like Ichiro. Better, actually, Michael admitted, surprised at his internal betrayal of his long-held crush on his sensei. He continued to stare down at the slight, fragile boy, eyeing the long blue-black hair that trailed sensuously around the figure’s unfamiliar gray karategi.

Who the hell is he? Why would they have me beat up a kid for my test? Puzzled, he glanced around the room, noting that he and the boy were alone. Ignoring his impending alarm, he gazed back to the unconscious figure.

D&C-VOL-2-800X1200-COVERThe youth’s face was truly beautiful. Michael’s inner artist drank in the smooth, pearly skin, the long, sooty lashes, and the pale apricot color blushed across the boy’s delicate cheekbones. God… An aching hunger preceded the lurch of Michael’s cock, which nudged his lower abdomen telegraphing its interest. Get it together. He’s like … twelve! Suddenly realizing that the boy showed no sign of regaining consciousness, Michael snapped from his trance and shook his opponent’s shoulder.

“Hey!” He leaned over the placid body, hand stretching toward the longish neck for a pulse. The telltale thump throbbed beneath his fingers, but his proximity to the boy’s face had him pausing to stare at the youth’s sculpted lips. Christ, get away from him before you do something you’ll regret. Frowning, he started to shift upright when a relentless grip clutched his hair.

Caught off guard, Michael fumbled helplessly as his head was tugged abruptly toward the face beneath him. The beautiful mouth claimed his lips, stealing his breath and muffling his gasp as a hot tongue invaded his mouth. The agile member eagerly caressed its counterpart, igniting Michael’s senses. The tantalizing scent of ripe apricots surrounded him, dizzying him with sensual promises, and urging him to surrender.
