Running The Bases With Drew Avera

Welcome to Running The Bases!  The first guest to sprint around the base paths is Drew Avera.  Drew is an unabashed space pirate at heart and in keeping with true pirate grit, he agreed to be the first guest on this feature.

So round the bases with Drew and then leave a comment when your done. Three lucky commenters will win an eCopy of Broken Worlds, the first book in the Alorian Wars Series.

  • Why space pirates?

Wouldn’t the better question be why not? Seriously, space pirates are cool. Just look at Han Solo. Yeah, he’s a good guy, but he isn’t a law abiding citizen necessarily. Though, I have to say the space pirates in The Alorian Wars aren’t really good guys. Maybe I have a skewed view of the whole space pirate thing after all…

  • How does your perspective as an active duty navy veteran influence your perspective as a sci-fi writer?

It gives me a perspective of what it’s like to live on a ship for months at a time. I also see a lot of different personalities, some good and some bad. When you read about one of my characters feeling claustrophobic on a ship tumbling across open space, you can bet I’ve been there, except it was open seas and not space. I think I would prefer space, though. At least until the life support fails and I begin questioning why I made my life choices…

  • List three things you can’t do without on a daily basis

I am actually pretty good about doing without. Most people take for granted going home and having all of their stuff every day, but being deployed (8 months last time) I have gotten used to going without. I will say, the things that make me happy each day is seeing my wife and kids, having a creative outlet, and coffee. I swear I’m not addicted to coffee, but if the world ever runs out, I might die.

  • We see that you play guitar. What album gets you into creative mode?

It varies from project to project. My first few books were written to Alter Bridge, Chevelle, and Breaking Benjamin. Recently I have discovered instrumental metal and find that the lack of lyrics helps keep me from being distracted. My favorite instrumental acts are Conquering Dystopia and Paul Wardingham. Sometimes I still get distracted and have to play my guitar for a bit before I get back to the writing. Playing guitar also relieves more stress than fictionally killing people does, so I need my therapy lol.

Running The Bases—Author Interviews

Starting tomorrow, January 23 2017, I’ll be starting a new feature on the blog called, Running The Bases (RTB).  This will combine my love of baseball with my writing to bring you short, four question interviews—one for each base—with primarily speculative fiction authors.  My hope is these will be a home run as I try to bring on authors who are new to the Land of Make Believe to give readers new idea for books/series to check out.  There will also be chances to win free eBooks from my guests.

If there are any authors you’d like me to try to get on the feature, let me know in a comment. If you’re an author who wants to be featured, contact Naomi at [email protected] for more information.

I hope you enjoy these as much as I do, and as always,

Enjoy The Journey!

An Interview with Anna Butler—Makepeace Blog Tour and Giveaway

Please welcome back Anna Butler.  Anna came to visit last year about this time to talk about Heart Scarab, Book 2 of her Sci-fi series Taking Shield. You can find that interview here:

Anna Butler Interview:

This time, Anna and I are going to getting into more specifics about not only the book, but the universe she created.  When you’re done reading the interview, make sure you enter her giveaway.

An Interview With Anna Butler

Hi Anna. Welcome back. What have you been up to since you last visited?

I’ve been working hard on the fourth Taking Shield book, The Chains of Their Sins, which went to my publisher and editor only this week in final draft. It picks up the Shield story after the events of Makepeace, dealing mostly with the political fallout, and we get to see some of the prisoners rescued from Makepeace and find out more about what happened to them.

I’m also about half-way into the second of my steampunk series, which started out with The Gilded Scarab, published in February last year. In this follow-up book, the heroes Rafe Lancaster and Ned Winter are in Aegypt for the archaeological digging season—Ned is an Aegyptologist—where they will face up to sabotage and danger. The book is called The Dog Who Swallows Millions. I hope this will be sent to the publisher in the autumn.

Tell us a bit about Makepeace.

Working on the data that he collected way back in the first book, Gyrfalcon, Bennet finds evidence that human prisoners are being kept alive on Makepeace, a planet that was once a human colony but was overrun by the Maess a century or more before. It takes a little while for his analysis to be complete, but what he concludes the Maess are doing shocks and horrifies not only him but also his military and political masters. He’s sent to Makepeace, which is now deep in Maess territory, to see if it’s possible to rescue the people trapped there. What he finds proves his analysis right. What the Maess has in store for humanity is not good. The book deals with the raid behind Maess lines and the immediate aftermath. It’s the most overtly ‘military’ of the books.

Let talk specifics. I know the title Makepeace comes from the planet, but was there some hidden meaning in either the planet’s name or title?

You got me! Yes. It’s an ironic name, the irony coming from the juxtaposition between the burgeoning demands of a new political movement that wants peace because humanity is so tired of war, and the horrible realisation the Bennet comes to that nothing will stop the Maess, and that peace is an illusion. Not subtle, of course, but it made me smile.

Where did the idea for the Maess come from?

I’m very fond of old school science fiction – Star Wars, Trek, BSG, Babylon 5. I wanted an opponent for humanity that was, rather like the Shadows of Babylon 5, a race of older, inimical beings that had no point of similarity to humans, no sense of even faint kinship that the humans can appeal to. We’ll actually find out more about them in the final book, but what Bennet saw of them in Gyrfalcon, they’re have amorphous bodies capable of being twisted into other shapes (you might remember the one Bennet saw ‘grew’ a mirror image of Bennet’s own face and screamed at him). And, also like the Shadows, I wanted them to be few in number and having to use other means of fighting – hence the cyborg drones, which owe something to Imperial Stormtroopers, BSG amd innumerable Trek episodes.

Why are Dreadnoughts ‘irreplaceable?’

Purely the immense capital cost.

Albion has been at war for three generations now. It is a cripplingly expensive war to wage, and even with an economy heavily focused on supporting the war, there just isn’t enough money in the coffers to build something as huge as a dreadnought. Building a new one would take something like a century’s worth of GDP to finance!

How did you come up with the ‘science’ for your space ships?

A lot of research, a lot of thinking about what’s shown in other books and on TV. I don’t always show it all in the books, though. For instance, all the spaceships are capable of FTL travel, with hyperdrive engines that drop them out of normal space and into hyperspace (so I can get around Einstein’s pesky relativity limitations). What I don’t do in the story is set aside narrative space for explaining how it works or how the ships navigate. That’s because I’m not writing a treatise on FTL travel or a handbook for role playing games. I’m storytelling, and I don’t want to take up chunks of text with stuff that does not move the story along.

I know some people revel in the science-y stuff, though, and certainly one or two reviews have grumbled that I’ve handwaved over that too much. So at some point, I’ll probably add it as extra background content on my website.

Do you find it difficult to come up with realistic ‘systems’ that you can keep consistent as you write further into the series?

I’ve been careful to keep a large ‘bible’ of things that help me keep the story more or less under control. This ranges from the name of every dreadnought and destroyer in Fleet to a list of medals for valour to a detailed essay on Albion’s political structure and governance. Mostly, this seems to work out!

Last year you hinted that Bennet won’t see Flynn again until Book Four – The Chains of Their Sins. Should we hold any hope for Flynn to be in Makepeace?

Flynn is there, although not in equal time to Bennet (Makepeace is essentially Bennet’s story), but he and Bennet do not meet. Flynn’s chapters are more to do with a ‘meanwhile, back on the Gyrfalcon’ storyline, especially his short-lived relationship with Bennet’s sister Natalia. Flynn rather unashamedly uses her to try and get information on what Bennet is up to.

You mention that “Shield” soldiers get rotations out of that unit for a time, was it hard to create your own ‘code of military service’ for the series and what other quirks did you put in?

I don’t think it was hard, precisely, but it was a great deal of fun. I have built up a spreadsheet that sets out how Albion’s Defence Forces are governed, setting out the chain of command from the Supreme Commander downwards, listing all 9 Fleet Flotillas, the 9 Infantry regiments (under Field Marshal Klara), the Shield Regiment, Transport Fleet, Demeter Transfer Station and the three fixed space-defence bases. The idea was simply so I had it clear in my head how everything interlocks, even if every detail never makes it into the books.

In Shield, for example, ships are brigaded into a battlegroup, headed by a major. Every three battlegroups are headed up by a colonel. So Bennet has a clear career path to get him to the point he’s aiming for – he *really* wants to command the regiment one day!

When it comes to the Gyrfalcon, I have organization charts for the squadrons and more spreadsheets showing how they work a shift system across a 25 hour duty period.

Control freak much?!

Are there other worlds like Makepeace, ones that were once human colonies, but are now under Maess control?

Several. Humanity isn’t winning this war. They’ve had to cede space and territory – in the second book, Heart Scarab, they lost the planet Telnos, and that isn’t a lone example. What’s unique about Makepeace, though, is the presence of live human prisoners. That’s very unusual. The Maess usually kill humans without compunction. That’s what makes it imperative for Bennet to go and find out what’s happening there, and what sort of threat that may pose to humans.

Is there anything after The Chains of Their Sins?

At least one more book, tentatively called Day of Wrath. I have a lot to cover, so I’m not sure I’ll get everything into one book. I’ll have to try and be more concise than usual! I won’t give too much away here, but some of the hints and strands of the earlier books come to fruition in a significant political and military crisis. And set against that, I hope to get Bennet and Flynn’s relationship to a hopeful stage – Chains will be full of angsty UST that will need a resolution!

What else do you have coming out?

Nothing planned at the moment. I’m focused on finishing the second steampunk novel and getting the last Shield book done. I’m not a terribly prolific writer. I envy people who produce a novel every couple of months, but I just don’t write that fast.

Any recommendations for readers that you’ve read and enjoyed lately?

I’ve been revisiting some old favourites recently, and have really been enjoying rereading David Weber’s Honor Harrington series. These are military sci-fi books with, most unusually for its time, a female main character who has agency and doesn’t rely on a man to rescue and protect her. I loved them when I first read them, and thoroughly enjoyed them since. They’re a sort of female Hornblower in space.

Last question is all yours. What else would you like to tell readers about the series, the book, other books, anything?

At the moment, romance as a genre is huge, and the m/m element of that is burgeoning and growing. That’s great, but it does mean that any books with LGBT protagonists are looked at through a romance lens, and if any of your readers pick up a Taking Shield book and are looking for romance, they are doomed to disappointment!

But while Taking Shield isn’t romance, it *is* a love story—a very deep and, at times, intense love story that covers six years of interstellar war and billions of miles of space travel. The Maess war and everything Bennet has to do there gets equal billing with the slow unfolding of his relationship with Flynn, and sometimes the love gets pushed into second place. But it’s there, all the same. And perhaps one day, at the end of everything, they’ll get the chance they deserve.

But honest. No hearts and flowers here!

Thanks again, Anna for coming by.

About the Taking Shield series

gyrfalcon_cvr_f-businesscardEarth’s a dead planet, dark for thousands of years; lost for so long no one even knows where the solar system is. Her last known colony, Albion, has grown to be regional galactic power in its own right. But its drive to expand and found colonies of its own has threatened an alien race, the Maess, against whom Albion is now fighting a last-ditch battle for survival in a war that’s dragged on for generations.Taking Shield charts the missions and adventures of Shield Captain Bennet, scion of a prominent military family. Against the demands of his family’s ‘triple goddess’ of Duty, Honour and Service, is set Bennet’s relationships with lovers and family.

When the series opens, Bennet is at odds with his long term partner, Joss, who wants him out of the military and back in an academic, archaeological career. He’s estranged from his father, Caeden, who is the HeartScarab_cvr_f (1)commander of Fleet’s First Flotilla. Events of the first book, in which he is sent to his father’s ship to carry out an infiltration mission behind Maess lines, improve his relationship with Caeden, but bring with them the catalyst that will destroy the one with Joss: one Fleet Lieutenant Flynn, who, over the course of the series, develops into Bennet’s main love interest.

Over the Taking Shield story arc, Bennet will see the extremes to which humanity’s enemies, and his own people, will go to win the war. Some days he isn’t able to tell friend from foe. Some days he doubts everything, including himself, as he strives to ensure Albion’s victory. And some days he isn’t sure, any longer, what victory looks like.

About Makepeace

Makepeace_cvr_fReturning to duty following his long recovery from the injuries he sustained during the events recounted in Heart Scarab, Shield Captain Bennet accepts a tour of duty in Fleet as flight captain on a dreadnought. The one saving grace is that it isn’t his father’s ship—bad enough that he can’t yet return to the Shield Regiment, at least he doesn’t have the added stress of commanding former lover Fleet Lieutenant Flynn, knowing the fraternisation regulations will keep them apart.

Working on the material he collected himself on T18 three years before, Bennet decodes enough Maess data to send him behind the lines to Makepeace, once a human colony but under Maess control for more than a century. The mission goes belly up, costing Albion one of her precious, irreplaceable dreadnoughts and bringing political upheaval, acrimony and the threat of public unrest in its wake. But for Bennet, the real nightmare is discovering what the Maess have in store for humanity.

It’s not good. It’s not good at all.

The thing, whatever it was, had fallen between two pods. It didn’t move. Unlike the soldier outside, it didn’t kick its legs or drum its heels. It felt nothing. Bennet bent over it, laser at the ready, his shoulders lifting to hunch protectively over his neck. He blew out a soft breath. Thank fuck. Thank fuck.

Not an organic Maess, at least.

Definitely a drone. Possibly a modified EDA? It had the same well articulated hands, the same smooth plasticised skin over the electronics and metal underneath. But the metallic body had a bluish tinge.

The head was different. His first thought was it was translucent, the interior scattered with pinpoint lights. But no. The ovoid was bigger than usual but solid and opaque. Some sort of mesh covered the metal casing, the tiny lights woven into it at varying depths, giving the illusion he could see inside.

Blue lights, the intense sapphire blue of the lights fizzing down the columns into the pods. Whatever this was, it was no ordinary drone.

The lights in its head dimmed. Flickered out.

The thing was deactivated.

It had shaken Haydn out of his previous calm. “What the hell is that?”

T18. Bennet had seen something like this on T18. Just a glimpse. When he’d seen that Thing, the real Maess, surrounded by drones, there had been something else. Something thinner than the usual drones, less bulky. Blue lights were involved, too. The Strategy Unit analysts never had worked out what it was. In the end they’d concluded it had been a problem with his camera, reflecting the lighting inside the base on T18. He’d had no reason to argue.

Well, now he knew it hadn’t been the lighting.

BLURB: A whole different world exists beneath the surface.

The last thing Nisha expects while patrolling his territory is to find his mate, but his instincts tell him the handsome human diving into the surf is the one meant for him. Two bites and Kannon will be joined to him forever. But when Kannon’s father disrupts the mating process, Nisha releases his claim, hoping beyond hope his mate will one day return.

While free diving with his father, Kannon is bitten by a seductive merman. Although he swore to never go near the ocean again, the pull to return to the water and his mystery man remains strong. Finally, after fifteen years away, an impromptu wedding brings Kannon back to the Seychelles, and his destiny.

Kannon only plans to stay on the island for a week, but this time Nisha won’t let his mate go without a fight. Merfolk and human culture collide as the embers of Nisha and Kannon’s mate bond ignite, and Nisha must complete the mating before it’s too late.

AuthorInterview

Welcome Michelle. It’s been a bit since your last visit, so remind readers who you are by telling everyone a bit about yourself.

Well, there isn’t really much to tell, lol. This October I’ve been married for twenty-three years. Both of our kids are grown and have moved out of the house. I no longer work, thanks to medical issues, but that’s given me the chance to explore writing full-time.

Beneath the Surface.Mermen. How cool. Tell us a bit about the book?

Nisha stumbled across his mate years ago and, reacting to instinct, started the mating process. Many years pass before his mate returned to the islands. Nisha has a limited amount of time to convince Kannon, his mate, to stay. But Nisha’s a merman. His way of thinking doesn’t often aligned with a human’s.

The setting for the book is the Seychelles. (for those who don’t know, the Seychelles are an island group in the Indian Ocean) What made you choose this as your setting?

The story idea came from a program I was watching on the History Channel about different African tribes and their varied beliefs. A few days later there was a documentary on mermaids on the Animal Channel.

Next thing I knew, I’m researching what islands are located off the off the coast of Africa with the idea of doing a merman book. The original story idea involved an African tribe who worshiped the ‘water gods’ and an underwater photographer sent to live with that tribe as part of a documentary. That idea didn’t exactly pan out, but the setting stuck.

What part of the story was the most to write and why?

I most enjoyed writing was the ending scene. I don’t want to do a spoiler, but it was something I don’t normally write. It was a lot of fun, lol. (Yeah, that’s vague, I know. Sorry!)

What part made you struggle the most?

Getting Nisha’s attitude—a non-human—to mesh with Kannon’s—a human who is none too pleased when he figures out just what exactly Nisha did years ago.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb.

Nisha has a sister, Brooke. She’s marrying Kannon’s best friend, Brett.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Right now a short shifter story called Paws and Claws is my main focus. That’s going to ARe. Plus I plan to do a sequel to Beneath the Surface. Hopefully that’ll get out this year.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

 Five Things About Me

  1. If I get to laughing really hard, I’ll snort—which makes me laugh even harder.
  2. I kick ass on Galaga.
  3. We sometimes open the window in the master bath for Kitty. We call that window the ‘Kitty Window’. I swear, if we ask him if he wants to get in the Kitty Window, he runs to the bathroom, lol!
  4. The older I get, the more hot-natured I’ve become. I used to hate the cold, but now I’m reassessing that.
  5. I love home improvement shows. I especially like the shows where houses are flipped for profit. I find the ‘before and after’ images fascinating. The hubby dreads me watching them because I end up with all these great ideas, lol!

Excerpt

A whole different world existed under the sea—lighting, sounds, even the feeling of otherworldliness. No matter how clear the water, it still played tricks, even on experienced divers.

The colorful tropical fish, artifacts, and the remnants of history buried beneath the waves—along with a mysterious landscape mostly untouched by humans—always gave Kannon a thrill. Parts of the reef weren’t very deep, so he had no trouble freediving.

This year for vacation, Kannon and his dad rented a boat and guide to take them to the reefs around the Seychelles. This was by no means the first time he’d gone snorkeling. Growing up along the California coast guaranteed Kannon was comfortable in the water.

The guide had warned them to stay together, but Kannon had other ideas. Besides, he wasn’t going that far off. After investigating the colorful reef fish and interesting coral formations—and seeing his dad was distracted—Kannon slowly but steadily wandered off on his own. An outcrop of rocks covered in algae caught his eye, and he went to investigate.

Many of the multihued native fish swam past him, curious as to what he was. It was funny how they circled him. Kannon held his hand out. A few braver fish darted in, nibbled at his fingers, and then swam off. God, what a rush it was. Nothing was better than this.

He drew closer to the outcrop, surprised it was much deeper than he’d first thought. Huh, not an outcrop, but the mouth of an underwater cave. Cool. From a distance it appeared to be nothing more than oddly shaped rocks. Peering inside, he was unable to see past the murky blackness within.

Curious, he reached his hand out, stretching toward the mouth of the cave. His scalp prickled. A tingle washed through him. The water around him caressed his body as he hung weightlessly, staring at the cave entrance as his dick swelled in his trunks. What the…?

It wasn’t as if he made a habit of getting horny while diving, so what the hell? Torn between desire and unease, he hovered in the tropical water. Chills chased up his spine, and goose bumps broke out over his body.

His heart rate sped up—not a good thing underwater—and the feeling of being watched crept across his nerves. Something was in there, and his mind screamed at him to get away even as the urge to reach inside nearly overwhelmed him.

Kannon’s body swayed dangerously closer. His nipples ached as the water flowed past, and he had to force himself not to whimper as need struck him. He jerked back. There’s something waiting for me, just waiting for me to reach in so it can… what? So it can do what?

Jesus, he needed to get a serious grip on his imagination, and crap, he had to surface too. Lack of oxygen made the decision for him. All this panicking on his part had used up his air—stupid of him.

He surfaced and shook the hair out of his eyes. Wow, is that our boat way over there? Oh man, Dad’s going to kill me. Worried about the fit his dad was going to have, he was totally unprepared for the strange guy who popped up next to him, although “guy” might have been overly nice.

Kannon yelped, but the dude across from him just smiled. The androgynous, fey face wasn’t quite human. The long pointed ears were a good indication, as was the glimpse of sharp little teeth.

Oh, and the gills at its neck.

Azure blue hair floated in the water around shapely shoulders and cobalt blue eyes stared back at him. It was a visage that was hauntingly beautiful, otherworldly, and a tad disconcerting. The creature smiled slightly as if he agreed. It—whatever it was—scared the bejesus out of him.

Then it reached out and dragged Kannon under the water.

An Interview with Asta Idonea—Author of Beastly Businessmen and Guitar Gods

Please welcome Asta Idonea to the Land of Make Believe.  She has agreed to let me ask a few questions and she’s brought an excerpt and giveaway as part of her blog tour.

An Interview with Asta Idonea

Welcome Asta. You’ve not been interviewed on the site before, so let’s start by telling everyone a bit about yourself.

I’m British-born, but I have lived in Australia for 8½ years now. I was backpacking here when I met my husband on the bus. I just never went home. I worked in admin until 2014, when I left to try my hand as a freelance editor and author.

Beastly Businessmen and Guitar Gods is a mouthful, but an awesome title. How did you come up with that for a list of short stories?

The stories themselves gave rise to the title. One involves a stolen guitar (in the original myth the owner of the stolen item is a god) and in another a businessmen takes on the role of the Beast in Beauty and the Beast.

Talk about the theme of the collection. What genre(s) would you say it fits into?

There’s some contention here, as several people have wanted to call it fantasy because the stories are based on myths and fairytales; however, my retellings are in all a modern setting without any hint of magic, so to my mind they are contemporary MM romances.

So, much like you’re not allowed to have a favorite child, yet people do, which of the stories in the collection is your favorite?

How mean you are! There are things I love about each, but if you force me to choose, I think the final story: A Debt is a Debt. I love Dunstan and Wynn, and the way they develop through the tale.

What story was the most fun to write and why?

Probably Dragged into Love, because the original myth is so amusing and it was great fun adapting it to the modern era. It’s the most comical of the six, for sure.

What story made you struggle them most?

That would be Assignations and Ultimatums. Not for writing the story itself but for choosing which one to adapt. I had the five and I knew I needed one more; however, all those that came to mind relied too heavily on magic. Then my eye fell upon my book of Maori folktales, and at last I had the answer.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb about one of the stories.

All these stories tie-in to one another, so watch out for brief appearances of characters in tales outside their own. In particular, a mysterious figure arrives towards the end of Assignations and Ultimatums, but you won’t find out who he is until you read the remaining stories.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Wow, I have so many things underway; it’s hard to know where to start. Between now and June, I have five short story releases either as singles or in anthologies (or both). Four are MM, the other is MF (under my alternate pen name Nicki J. Markus) Also coming within that time span is an MM sci-fi novella called Fire Up My Heart.

I have another ten short stories submitted I am waiting to hear back on, along with an MF novel. Meanwhile, I am currently working on three MM shorts, two MM novellas, and two MF novellas. So, as you can see, I am keeping pretty busy and should have plenty of new stories to share during 2016 and into 2017. As usual, it’s an eclectic mix of historical, contemporary, sci-fi, and paranormal, so hopefully there’s something for everyone.

EXCERPT—Guessing Games

“Good evening, handsome. What’s a pretty boy like you doing sitting all alone, looking so sour-faced?”

Sasha glanced up to find a young man perched on the edge of his desk, watching him from behind a fringe of golden hair that hung over his right eye. He seemed young. Too young to be an employee, surely, and yet how else would he have gotten in here? Unless he was another staff member’s son. Or maybe—

“Twenty-one.”

“I’m sorry?”

“You were wondering how old I am, and the answer is twenty-one.” He grinned. “I know I don’t look it, but I promise it’s true. I am one hundred percent legal in every way.”

“I suppose you’re going to tell me next that you read minds?” Sasha found himself smiling despite himself, a little of his despair lost in light of his companion’s merriment.

The man laughed and the bright, airy sound echoed around the room. “I wish! Think how delightful that would be. I could learn everyone’s deepest, darkest desires…. But, no, it’s just I’m used to it being the first question anyone asks me, so I’ve learnt to anticipate it and get it out of the way as quickly as possible. You’re Sasha, yes?”

“Yes. How did—?”

The man cut Sasha off with a dismissive wave of his hand. “I’ve heard talk of you around the departments today. Figured I’d come and see you for myself, though I fully expected you to be gone by now.”

“I’ve got a bit of a—” Sasha broke off, unwilling to divulge his terrible secret to this stranger, however infectious the young man’s cheerful mien might be.

“Oh, come on, you can tell me. I don’t work in this department and I swear I won’t blab. Scout’s honour. Cross my heart and hope to die.” His expression was one of dramatic, wide-eyed sincerity that was too overblown to be anything other than put-on.

Sasha hesitated a second longer, but the need to share his burden won out. “I’m supposed to log all these files in the records management system, but I don’t know how. I don’t understand the software, all the codes and terminology.” Saying it out loud, a weight lifted from Sasha’s shoulders and he breathed more freely than he had all day.

The young man cocked his head. “Suppose I could help you. What would you give me in payment for my assistance?”

New Release: The Autumn Lands; by J. Scott Coatsworth—Author Interview

I’d like to welcome J. Scott Coatsworth to the Land of Make Believe today. Scott is a tireless crusader in the quest for inclusive Sci-fi/Fantasy and he proves that it is more than just a passing interest with his newest release. He’s agreed to answer a few questions about the book today. As an aside, I’m in the middle of reading it now (I’m a slow reader) but it’s well worth $3.99 so go get a copy today.

Author Interview:

What is “The Autumn Lands” about?

Hmmm… that’s a tough one. It’s about a place where it’s always fall. And it’s about a young man coming to terms with his sexuality. And it’s about an elf with a past that he can’t remember.

And there’s a twist. In my stories, there’s almost always a twist. Continue reading New Release: The Autumn Lands; by J. Scott Coatsworth—Author Interview

AuthorInterview

Welcome JJ! Since this is the first time you’ve been a visitor, tell everyone a bit about yourself.

Hello and thanks for having me! I’m an Ohio native, married with one child, and I tend to have a eclectic outlook on life. Dark and gritty appeals as much to me as farcical comedy. I’d rather have a cheese plate for dessert than a gooey brownie sundae.

You write mostly science fiction, do you have a technical background?

My degrees are in liberal arts, but I took a heavy load of science classes as electives in college, purely for love of the subject matter. I’ve also always kept up with my reading in the areas I enjoy such as epidemiology, human evolution, and animal behavior. The NOVA and Nature series on PBS are must watch for me, and have been since I was in elementary school. Let’s just say I tend to do very well in the science related categories on Jeopardy.

Your Planet Alpha Series is MFM, but the MM pairing is already established when they add the F to their relationship.  Talk a bit about that series.

Planet Alpha was a specific submission call from the publisher, but I hesitated since I’d never written menage before. That lasted about twenty-four hours until a story popped into my head. Bondmate turned out to be the first in the whole Planet Alpha series, pretty amazing considering it was my first ever attempt at the genre. Evernight publishing set up parameters for the books as far as length and the characteristics of the two alien species. Past that, it was up to the writer’s imagination.

What works for me in constructing a menage story is to have the men already comfortable with and trusting each other so their seduction of a woman can be the main focus of the romance. As I wrote more of these stories and became more comfortable with the process, I gradually deepened the male relationships into intimate sexual partnerships. The real challenge for me was creating a MM relationship that was perfectly fulfilling, but would be enhanced by the addition of another person.

Raider Captured is MM Sci-fi Romance, how difficult was the transition from the MFM pairings in Planet Alpha?

It was a relief, actually! Keeping track of three POVs per story can be mentally challenging, so being able to focus on two characters was very nice. I’d impulsively decided to write menage, and by the time I’d finished several up them, I realized I was ready for a new challenge. That might have meant a MF erotic romance, but these two guys were in my head and anxious to find each other, so I had to write their story next.

Are there more books planned in the Raider Captured universe?

Absolutely. I have one completed and it’s been submitted to the publisher, and I am just finishing up a third as part of my NaNoWriMo project this year.

Where did the inspiration for Sagiv and Daran come from?

Daran was easy; he was sort of an amalgamation of every idealistic and intelligent character on Star Trek. He’s proud of his work, curious about everything, and very honorable, all things I admire in a person. Loved him. Sagiv was different. His character came from all these dark issues regarding child soldiers, how boys are raised, and the way societies usually segregate those who are deemed different. So he was withdrawn and cautious, as well as resigned to his imminent death. He was very fun to write, and I hope his perspective will make readers think about the price some people pay to serve a society who would like to ignore their existence.

Which part of the story do you enjoy writing the most; the sci-fi or the romance?

It depends on the scene I’m working on. I really like writing about the settings in sci-fi, so if I have to describe a space station or alien planet, I’m in heaven. I also like to write romance when the characters are relaxing their guard and getting to know each other. That gives me some great dialogue and can really let the reader get to know them outside of all the space battles and slime monster attacks.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

There’s actually a minor character in Raider Captured who I plan on writing about soon, but his story will definitely be MF. I’ll let the readers guess who it might be.

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

Dialogue. I love talking of any sort, whether it be aggressively posturing before a fight, or witty back-and-forth, or one of those conversations where both parties are misunderstanding each other the entire time. Dialogue is something I can write very quickly.

What’s your least favorite?

Submitting to a publisher. It’s horrible because you sweat over all the guidelines, and as soon as you hit send, you notice a typo or mistake. Then you wait and wait for a response, which sometimes you never get so it feels like your story is lost in the woods with no way to come home.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

I am nearly finished with a third MM set in the same universe as Raider Captured. Once the last two scenes are written, I believe I’ll go in a completely new direction with a post-apocalyptic set on Earth after an alien invasion.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

Oh, there are so many good books out there. One I always recommend is Gospel, by Wilton Barnhardt. It’s a travelogue/ancient diary/academic quest/socio-political book of massive proportions and is highly entertaining. Plus it’s filled with accurate footnotes, so a perfect read if you want to learn something about Catholic history, the Middle East, a lost Apostle, or American televangelists.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

George Macdonald Fraser, who has sadly passed away. He was a U.K. officer in WWII and wrote some fantastic satire of his time in the armed forces, plus a series of historical fiction works featuring his caddish Victorian hero, Flashman. Again, he used a lot of footnotes, which seems to be a recurring theme in the fiction I like, go figure.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

I’m a fiend for thrift stores; I can’t go a week without stopping in at least one. My want list is constantly evolving. When I was younger and furnishing my home, I looked for housewares like Spode china and crystal goblets. Now I’m in the process of renovating my personal style to get away from the standard t-shirt and jeans. I’ve been shopping for funky jackets and vintage sweaters as we head into fall. My latest great find was a blue, handwoven wool coat, with a hood, made in Ireland. It’s simply gorgeous and I can’t wait for a cold snap to wear it.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

Goodness, that’s a tough one. I’m not very interesting! Here are a couple of fun facts: I once won a chili cookoff and I keep a machete in my coat closet, just in case

BLURB: Is love possible between sworn enemies when the universe seems determined to tear them apart?

Sagiv, a genetically modified Atavaq fighter, is captured when his master’s raid on a Domidian ship goes wrong. Daran, a young Domidian science officer, claims the warrior for ransom and as a subject for study. As they spend time together in the close confines of the shipboard cabin, both learn more about the other’s culture, and against all odds, a fragile trust begins to form. But the ship is approaching a frontier outpost, where Daran will be expected to ransom Sagiv—even though it means condemning Sagiv to die for the dishonor of his defeat or suffer in the fighting pits. That’s if bounty hunters don’t find them first. Daran’s risen up the ranks through hard work and always following protocol, but he sees something in Sagiv that might be worth breaking the rules for the first time in his life—maybe even something worth sacrificing everything to keep.

Excerpt

His cheek was pressed to the soft rug on the floor. The material smelled faintly of perfumed wood, and he wrinkled his nose, unhappy something pleasant was intruding on his misery. To be the leader of the finest Creig raiding party one day and reduced to a worthless prisoner the next was a fate he’d never envisioned for himself. Sadness at his lost fellows settled over him in a cold wave, and he closed his eyes tightly until the sensation passed.

A sudden awareness of warm moisture on his body roused him, and he jerked upright as far as his immobilized arms would allow. Was the Domidian urinating on him? With a growl he sought the source of the sensation and was shocked to silence when he saw the young officer trying to apply a wet cloth to the phase wound on his hip.

“What are you doing?”

“Cleaning this up. It might become infected if I don’t.” The pretty boy gave him a measured glance, then concentrated on the rent in his skin. Sagiv took a breath and tried to hitch away but was brought up short by the manacles yet again. The Domidian’s vigorous application of the cleaning cloth hurt, but Sagiv was determined not to react. He might have fallen from his hard-fought stature as a skilled warrior, but at least he wouldn’t flinch like a weakling when someone washed his body.

“It looks as though you endured blade cuts, blunt instrument strikes, and some sort of percussion volley,” the Domidian said in a conversational tone. Sagiv gave him a glare that would have sent one of his minions cowering to the floor. At least it would have worked yesterday, when he still had underlings. Now his brother Creig were dead, wasted in this futile raid made at the whim of an impulsive master or three. His current condition didn’t matter; he was bred and trained to serve and fight, not to think of his fate or wish for any different life. The Domidian, for his part, merely absorbed the scowl with a slight smile. Superior bastard. “I’m going to work on the most severe injuries first. Basic triage. I have several accreditations in first aid and battlefield medical treatment, so don’t worry for your health.”

The young man moved on to the welts that covered his back, and Sagiv endured the ministrations with teeth clenched, both to stop himself from making a pained sound and to prevent the conversation this bare-chinned youth seemed to desire. As the Domidian’s words sank in, he couldn’t help the question that sprang to mind.

“Heal me for the execution?” Sagiv shook his head once. These damned Domidians had such perverse notions. If only he’d been lucky and taken a phase bolt to the forehead yesterday. The young officer stopped touching him, and his skin twitched.

“Execution?”

“Death to pirates, that’s the code in the cold reaches of space.”

The Domidian laughed. Sagiv craned his head to observe him. Even though he was brought low by his defeat and loss of his collar, there was no way he was going to be mocked by a spoiled boy.

“I follow a different code. The Domidian code.” The young man moved closer and pressed his fingers around the edge of the throbbing injury on Sagiv’s head.

Sagiv refused to flinch and instead decided to scoff. “Oh, yes, the code whereby you decide everything you do is correct and expect every other race you encounter to bow down before your magnificence.”

The Domidian’s full lips tightened and a spark lit up his eyes. “We cannot be other than what we are.”

“Arrogant whelp.” Sagiv’s stomach dropped when the young man smiled broadly. What was he doing engaging in conversation with the enemy? He was behaving as if they were at a rim world tavern sharing a flagon, far from the concerns of Domid and Atavaq politics. “Why are you treating me?”

He wanted to bite back the words, especially when he saw the intent expression of the other man.

“It is my duty to care for you. I have taken you as hostage proxy, and any ransom paid for your return will be mine.”

“Then you will be sorely disappointed.” Knowing that this boy would be deprived of even a small sum was the only achievement he could muster at this point. A Creig was worth nothing without the recommendation of a pleased master, without victories to bolster his reputation. The Domidian shrugged and pulled out a small case. He flicked it open, and Sagiv couldn’t help but look inside, sure he was going to see implements of torture. Instead, there were bandages and creams. The Domidian was going to help him. Pulling together the last shards of his dignity and rage, Sagiv decided to remain silent. No need to treat the youngster as if they were equals.

“You have a lot of bruising and contusions. Did all of these wounds occur in the altercation yesterday?”

Sagiv stared at the red carpet. Altercation. What a fine word for a muddled mess that had cost him so much. No, the majority of his injuries had been administered by his former masters as they’d assaulted him in the brig after their humiliating capture. No need to reveal that, or anything, to the Domidian. The young man waited a polite interval, then continued to speak as if there was a normal conversation to be had, all while he administered first aid.

“My name is Daran, of the Eridia clan. If you tell me your name, I’ll be able to initiate contact with your people and set up an exchange.” Daran waited for a response, but Sagiv pressed his lips together. He didn’t have a people, only assignments. Creig fighters existed on a different plane than civilian Atavaq, housed in exclusive barracks and given the finest in weapons, nutrition, and training. He jumped at the sensation of a warm ointment being carefully applied to the edges of one of the throbbing welts on his back. The wounds felt ugly, but he hadn’t been able to inspect them. Exactly what he deserved.

“I’m in service as a science specialist. I’m hoping you can teach me more about your kind. I’m very curious about you.”

Teach his enemy about Creig ways? Betray Atavaq? He’d die first. As the Domidian continued his treatment, Sagiv’s stomach boiled with regret and frustration. He slanted his eye toward the officer to detect what he was about and saw the other man frowning. Daran of the Eridia glanced up and hurriedly put a smile on his face.

“Your wounds, though painful I’m sure, are going to heal well now that you are under care. I was merely thinking about something else.”

The urge to ask what was strong. Sagiv wasn’t sure if he was interested in gaining more information about the enemy or genuinely intrigued by his unusual captor. The other man was treating his wounds and speaking to him as if they were partners. Equals. As if Sagiv wasn’t merely a tool to be repaired and sent back into service.

AuthorBioJ. J. Lore has been interested in the dashing men who roam outer space since she was transfixed by Han Solo piloting the Millennium Falcon a long time ago in a theatre far, far away. Sadly, there is no way for her to join in the fun of intergalactic adventures unless she writes them, so that’s what she does whenever she isn’t taking care of the business of life. If you can’t find her typing madly on her sluggish keyboard, she’s probably poking around in a thrift store searching for the perfect pair of worn jeans or a vintage kachina bolo tie. These days she puts her anthropology degree to work when she whips up dishes from many different cultures, most of which benefit from a liberal dose of sriracha or a smear of green curry paste. Her favorite reading topics are costume history, epidemiology, and permaculture, all of which she’d like to work into a story if she’s suddenly overcome with a brilliant idea someday.

Blog Tour—My Hero: The Olympian; by Max Vos – Author Interview and Giveaway

AuthorInterview

Today I got a chance to interview the always entertaining and somewhat larger than life, Max Vos as part of his My Here: The Olympian blog tour. Here’s your chance to learn a bit more about the man behind the books.

Welcome Max! Nice to finally get to have you sit down for an interview. Why don’t we begin by you start by telling everyone a bit about yourself.

I’m supposed to be retired… HA! I work harder now than when I worked full time. I now spend the majority of my time working on book related things. I love to travel and take one big trip a year. Next year… Europe.

Writing wasn’t your first ‘day’ job. What did you do before you were a full time writer?

I worked in the hospitality for almost 35 years. I was a Chef.

What was the first book you had published?

Full book was My Hero. I did a lot of short stories before that. They are now in Inappropriate Roads my own anthology.

Most of your published works are in the MM Romance Genre. Any plans to write something different any time soon?

No, I have no real plans to change genre’s. Write what you know, right?

Your latest book, My Hero: The Olympian is a sequel to your very popular My Hero. Before we discuss you latest book, tell us about the first one.

My Hero just kind of happened. The 2012 Olympics had just finished and football season was just getting ready to start. I wanted a good football story. It took on a life of its own and the what you have today is the end result.

I read on your blog that you were hesitant to write a sequl to My Hero. What made you pause and what changed your mind?

I had a dream about Johnny and Rich and woke up started writing. It was a long process. I stressed over this book more than anyother I’ve ever done.

Where did the inspiration for Johnny and Rich come from?

There was a player on the University of Tennesse that I thought was one of the best looking men I’d ever seen, he was my inspiration Rich reminded me of someone I went to school with.

What part of writing a sequel did you find the most difficult?

Almost everything. I second guessed myself a lot. I wanted to make sure that I did the characters justice and I wanted it to be as good as the first one.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

One of the things that I found challenging was that the main characters were already an established couple. Here we get to see them grown into themselves as individuals but also as a strong couple.

What’s your favorite part of the writing process?

Coffee!

What’s your least favorite?

All the stuff that I have to do after I write The End.

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

Yet something else that is different for me. It is a story of two men with PTSD but for completely different reasons.

What have you read lately that most people haven’t read but should?

I’ve been doing a beta read for a new author who is participating in NaNo. I’m loving it so far and I don’t really like shifter stories all that much.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

I would love to meet Gordon Merrick. His was the first gay book I read. I’d really like to meet Armistead Maupin. I think he would be a hoot.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Gardening. I love to play in the dirt.

Last question is all yours – feel free to talk about anything you want your readers to know about you, your book, anything at all.

What most people don’t know about me is that I’m really very shy. Big crowds scare the stuffin’ out of me.

Thank you, Max!

BLURB: After a romantic evening, Rich and Johnny face the light of day as a couple. Johnny’s coming out forces them to face some serious repercussions as the world of collegian jocks adjust to their first openly gay football player.

Rich is still working towards the World Diving Championships with his hopes and dreams set on the 2012 London Olympic Games, while as a couple they deal with concerns closer to home.

With the support of friends and family, the young couple grow closer together, but with prejudices and adversity at every turn will Johnny and Rich be able to tackle the world together?

No matter what, Rich will always be Johnny’s hero.

Excerpt

“No, I’m not going to and there is nothing you can say that will make me either.” Johnny crossed his arms, a defiant look on his face, his eyes narrowed slits.

“Oh come on, John, I wear them.” Rich held up the skimpy black racing briefs. “For me?”

Johnny looked away. “No. I said no and I mean no.”

Rich leaned in close to Johnny so only he could hear. “If you wear this, I can guarantee you some of the best sex in your life. If you think I get turned on by jock straps…”

Johnny glared down at Rich. “You don’t play fair.”

“Wasn’t it you who recently said that all is fair in love and war?” Rich smirked as he dangled the tiny briefs in front of Johnny.

“It better be the best ever.” Johnny let his arms drop. “Okay. But you promised.”

Again, Rich leaned in close. “Maybe even join the mile high club.”

Johnny’s eyebrows shot up and a grin blossomed on his face. “Deal.”

“Are we done here?” Dan called to the two college men. He was standing at the counter, credit card in hand.

“One more thing, Dad.” Rich hurried over to him. “This.”

Dan raised his eyebrows slightly. “Oookay then.”

Rich snickered when he saw Johnny blushing.

“I think this will be all,” Dan said to the clerk.

“I’m going to give you a discount,” the young woman said as she rang it up. “It isn’t every day that we can say an Olympian wore some of our gear.”

“I’m not an Olympian yet,” Rich commented.

“Rich Miller, I’ve known you my entire life, and if anyone is going to be an Olympian, it’s you.” Michelle Stubbon smiled at Rich as she started putting the pile of swimsuits, track suits, shorts, and other things that he and Johnny needed for London in a bag.

“Thanks, Michelle. I appreciate the confidence everyone has in me.”

“Just remember us lowly folk when you come home with Olympic gold,” she laughed as she handed Dan the receipt.

Better Than Safe; by Lane Hayes—Interview and Giveaway

The amazing Lane Hayes has come back to visit. She stopped by for an interview and to talk about her latest release, Better Than Safe, which released on September 25th. After the interview, make sure you check out the blurb and excerpt on your way to the entering her contest.

 An Interview With Lane Hayes

Welcome back Lane!  Since it’s has been a while since you’ve been here, remind people about who you are and what you write.

Hi Andrew. Thank you so much for having me back! I think I wrote the Right & Wrong series since my last visit here. That series was set in LA (my neck of the woods). It’s fitting that I return to your blog with a Better Than book set your DC stomping grounds! For those who don’t know, I am the author of two series, Better Than and Right and Wrong. I’m here today to chat about my newest release, Better Than Safe, which is book #4 in the series. Disclaimer for those who may not have read the other novels… these are standalones and can be read in any order. J

It’s great to see you’re returning to ‘where it began’ with another “Better Than” book. How do you think your writing career has changed since that first book?

I’ve definitely grown as a writer. Better Than Good was released in July 2013. It was a shot in the dark for me.  It was a way to deal with the internal struggle of sending my first son, who happens to be gay, off to college. He’d just come out and I felt terribly protective of him and vulnerable because I knew this was the beginning of his journey as a gay young man. I wasn’t going to allowed to participate in “raising” him through it first hand. This was his. My wish was that his journey be one of hope. Better Than Good is ultimately about self-discovery and hope. I had no idea what to expect. I was truly blown away by the overwhelming positive response to BTG.  In the past two and half years, I’ve made some professional changes. I am a full time author now. Better Than Safe is my seventh published novel and there is no looking back!

Before we talk Better Than Safe, tell us about what kind of books you like to write?

I write contemporary MM romance novels. I have always loved a good series and decided to try my hand at crafting a couple.  The first book in my third series will be released in January 2016.

You’re going to GRL this year (in just a few days actually) as a Featured Author. Any pre-con jitters?

LOL. Yes! I went as a reader to GRL in Chicago, which was a blast! I got to see fun, familiar faces (like you!) and meet some lovely new people. Not to mention meeting some of my own favorite authors, like Z.A. Maxfield and Marie Sexton. GRL is in San Diego this year, which is close to home. I would have gone as a reader again, but I’m thrilled to be given the opportunity to attend as a Featured Author. I’ll be nervous, for sure… but spending time with people who love this genre as much I do is well worth the butterflies!

How does the Better Than series differ from Right and Wrong?

They are set on opposite ends of the country. Better Than is set in DC and Right and Wrong is set primarily in LA. I purposely changed the setting of my second series so I could explore some of the cultural issues in the LA area Latino community. All three books in that series feature a Latino MC or in The Wrong Man, Brandon is half-African American.  My husband is Mexican American and I felt compelled to tell a story about strong Latino gay men and explore the difficulties because of religion and family expectations.

Do you have any plans to write something other than contemporary MM Romance?

At this moment, I love what I’m doing. I won’t close the door to trying something new. If I did, I’d probably want to branch into suspense or mystery. We’ll see… J

Okay, so let’s talk Better Than Safe. What is this about?

Better Than Safe is a May/December romance with a healthy dose of ‘opposites attract’ set in DC.  I couldn’t resist infusing this story with art to pay homage to the incredible Smithsonian.

Introduce us to your main characters, Paul and Seth.

Paul is a successful British ad exec who specializes in haute couture. His clients are prominent designers and fashion powerhouse corporations. He’s traveled the world extensively for work, but he’s looking forward to a small break, thinking perhaps the time at home will give him a chance to meet someone suitable.  Instead, he meets Seth.  Seth is eleven years Paul’s junior. He’s a fashion model, sometime guitarist in his friend’s band and an aspiring artist. He’s drop dead gorgeous, but he’s exactly the kind of man Paul swore off years ago.  Or is he? The more Paul learns about the Seth, the more he realizes he’s never met anyone like him. Seth is quirky and unpredictable but he’s also wise beyond his years and incredibly resilient. He’s a bad idea but he isn’t easy to ignore, or forget.

Will there be more adventures in this series?

I will definitely write a short story or two in Better Than but I’m not sure about another full length one. I don’t want to write the never-ending series, but if I feel like there is another story to tell, I won’t hesitate.  Better Than Safe was written for two reasons… there was more to say (and yes, I missed the DC crew!) and this is a bridge story to my next series, which takes place in NYC. One of the characters you’ll meet in Better Than Safe deserved a story of his own.  If you’ve read BTS, I bet you guessed who it is! J

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

If you’re a fan of the Better Than series, you’ll get a chance to catch up with everyone from the previous books, Better Than Good, Better Than Chance and Better Than Friends!

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

My WIP is book #2 in my new series. As I mentioned earlier, it’s set in NYC, one of my favorite places on earth! There is a wealth of inspiration to tap into in Manhattan! J

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Oscar Wilde. I love his wit and wisdom. He was very clever with a turn of phrase and had the uncanny ability to make something offensive sound almost… nice.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Traveling and spending time with family and friends. I’m hoping to take one more trip to NYC this year!

The last question is all yours. Tell the readers anything you like about you, your works, things you like. Anything at all.

Hmm. One more thing? I love football! This is officially my favorite time of year.  I know exactly what I’ll be doing Saturdays, Sundays, Mondays and Thursdays until the holidays! I’ve got my corner of the sofa with a fluffy blanket ready to snuggle. And when the games are over… I read.

Thank you so much for having me here today, Andrew! I look forward to seeing you soon!

Series: Better Than stories, Book 4

Author: Lane Hayes

Publisher: Dreamspinner Press

Cover Artist: Aaron Anderson

Length: Novel, 77k words

Release Date: September 25th, 2015

Blurb: Paul Fallon is a fashion advertising guru. He’s a genius at dealing with difficult editors, art directors, and designers alike. He thrives on the chaotic atmosphere and constant challenges. But in his personal life, he’s hoping for peace and stability. Settling down with a nice doctor or lawyer sounds perfect. Anyone but an artist. He’s been there, done that, and he doesn’t want to relive the heartache.

Seth Landau is a model, occasional guitarist, and aspiring painter. He’s quirky, flighty, and wise beyond his years. Life has taught him some tough lessons, then given him opportunities he never dreamed of. He’s learned to appreciate the fragility of life and to express it in his work. Seth’s flare for the absurd combined with a supple mind and a beautiful body are too alluring for Paul to ignore. Against his best intentions, Paul is drawn to the younger man whose particular brand of crazy challenges Paul to accept that things aren’t always as they seem. Sometimes taking a chance is better than being safe.

CommonExcerpt

My stomach growled. I was dead tired, hungry, and more than a little confused. Seth turned the corner before my brain could catalogue any further complaints. I studied his casual attire as he came closer. Worn black jeans, a white T-shirt with paint stains, and an unbuttoned black and blue striped cardigan. He looked more like a wacky artist than a sophisticated couture model, I mused. His sharp features were undeniably attractive but it seemed as though he’d chosen the basic clothing to downplay his beauty. Or maybe he’d just painted and couldn’t be bothered. There was something ridiculously appealing to me about our very opposite looks. Corporate formal versus art student chic. I glanced down at the sushi and willed my dick to behave.

“There you are. What kind of pasta do you want? I don’t have time to make it myself, but don’t worry, I’m buying pre-packaged but fresh. Your choices are spaghetti, tagliatelle, or pappardelle.”

I looked at the three choices he held up and pointed to the one in the middle. The tagliatelle.

“Really? I was thinking basic spaghetti but—”

“Then why did you ask?”

“I want your opinion. If you want the tagliatelle, we’ll get that one. Done.”

“Good. Let’s go. Do you have wine?”

“Yes. Hmm. I don’t know about the tag—”

“Seth. Get the spaghetti. I’m not bothered.”

“What do you mean by not bothered?”

“I mean….” I took a step forward so we stood toe to toe, Italian loafer to dirty white trainer and gave him a pointed glare. “I don’t give a shit. Pasta is pasta. It doesn’t matter to me what shape it comes in. At all.”

“You’re hungry, huh?”

“What tipped you off?”

“Sarcastic and cranky. Let’s go. You need food.” He turned away, carrying his basket of goods toward the front registers.

“What about wine?” I called after him.

He stopped in the middle of the aisle and curled his finger, motioning me to come to him with a devilish grin on his handsome face. I complied. We were alone for the moment, surrounded on either side of the cramped space by white bread and a variety of colorful cereals chock-full of preservatives and food dyes. I eyed him warily, wondering why he was stalling.

“I told you I have wine. Good wine too.”

“Marvelous. Let’s go.”

“But… there’s a catch.”

I rolled my eyes. “Of course there is. What is it? You need to swing by the dry cleaners first or—”

“Kiss me.”

“Are you crazy?”

“Why is it so crazy?” he asked innocently.

“Here are a couple reasons. One, we’re in the middle of a market in a family oriented part of town and two, we’re barely friends. Not lovers. Friends don’t kiss.”

He grinned. “Sure they do. What they probably don’t do is say something like, ‘you look so fucking hot in that suit, I wish I could take it off you right here next to the Cheerios and Wheat Chex,’ so I won’t go there, but I still think it’s okay to kiss.”

I stared at him with my mouth wide open, unable to find my voice. When he chuckled in amusement at my expense, I acted with uncharacteristic impulse and reached out to cup his neck and draw him close to me. He gasped in surprise at the quick movement. I smiled as our noses brushed, perversely pleased by his shock, and suddenly glad to be the one pushing him one step further. I licked his bottom lip before fusing my mouth over his in a swift but passionate kiss. I backed up with a grin and sauntered away, taking care he didn’t see me adjust my trousers as I moved with purpose to the front registers.

I set my bag of tomatoes on the conveyer belt and stepped aside when Seth joined me a moment later.

“You play dirty,” he muttered as he set the contents in his basket with mine.

“You asked for it.”

“Maybe I did. Beware. I can play dirty too.”

I bit my cheek hard and turned toward the rack of magazines nearby, hoping to diffuse the sexual tension racing through my body. Stress, exhaustion, and hunger were suddenly non-issues. All I wanted now was sex. The one thing I couldn’t have with this man. Not without risking more than I was willing.

Unbreak Broken Blog Tour—An Interview With J K Hogan and Giveaway

I’ve long been a fan of JK Hogan, and I’ve been stalking her Facebook page to see pictures of her son, so I was glad to be able to get the chance to interview her as part of her Unbreak Broken book tour. After you read the interview, make sure to enter the contest and check out the other blogs for more information about her and the Unbreak Broken.

An Interview with J K Hogan:

Welcome J. K. Since this is your first time on the blog, take a moment to tell everyone about who you are and what you write.

Thanks for having me, Andrew! I live in North Carolina with my husband, with whom I’ll be celebrating 10 years this year, and our son. Got one more on the way, too! I’ve been writing off and on for most of my life, but I’ve only been in publishing since 2012, and I’ve just released my 7th title. I’m a stay-at-home (work-at-home) mom, since I do both writing and freelance graphic design.

Your son is just a bit younger than my daughter. How do you find balancing writing and family?

I’m not gonna lie, it’s hard. I pretty much just have to adapt. I just have to squeeze in writing time whenever I can, because no day is ever the same. A sturdy laptop helps. LOL

It took some adjusting, because I was always one of those people who sort of needed to get in the right mindset to really get going. It’s been a lot harder recently since I’ve been pregnant. Makes my brain fuzzy. L

What types of stories do you write? {This is mainly a genres question, but I left if vague so you can take it wherever you like.}

I’ve done a few different things over the last four years. I have an m/f paranormal romance series that was originally with a small publishing house, but I self-publish them now. They were pretty fun to write; they were about witches with a few shapeshifters thrown in.

With Wilde City Press, I have an m/m contemporary romance series, which Unbreak Broken is a part of, and a romantic (slightly paranormal) suspense novel that will eventually become a series.

Before we talk about your newest release, Unbreak Broken, what was the first book you had published?

My first book was Fire on the Island, the first in that m/f paranormal series.

How has your writing changed since then?

I’d like to say my writing has matured a lot. I try to put more into planning (I plotted “Fire” out loud to my husband over a 2 hour dinner and that was the extent of it), but I’m more of a pantser. I’ve learned a lot from my editors along the way, so I try to pay more attention to the technical stuff as I go. Mainly I’ve stopped worrying about what I should or shouldn’t write. I write what pops into my head, make sure it’s the best I can make it, and then it’s up to the publisher whether they’re interested or not.

Unbreak Broken, is the third book in your Coming About series. Let start with the series; what’s the common theme?

The common theme is the main characters affecting a change in their lives to become their true selves. They’ve all got baggage in their pasts and things they’re hiding, so the stories are about bringing all that to light and becoming comfortable with themselves as they are.

Tell us about book three, Unbreak Broken.

Unbreak Broken is mainly Rory’s story. His wedding—to a woman—is what started the series and brought all the characters together. But he’s been hiding some pretty big secrets all along.

Introduce us to your main characters, Rory and Bennett.

Rory is a big teddy bear of a guy who teaches photography to high school kids, including Bennett’s daughter. Bennett is a harbor patrol officer who loves nothing more than being out on the water—except his best friend Jessie and their daughter Addison.

As a gay man raising a daughter, my ears (or eyes) always perk up when I see that as part of the plot. What inspired you to write this story?

Well, all along, I had to find someone for Rory. He’s a big dude, but kind of cuddly, and he has this secret desire to be taken care of. He really wants someone to make him feel safe and… small, I guess. Once I started writing Bennett, giving him a daughter was initially a way to get him and Rory in the same room a couple of times, but Addison took on a life all her own. I wanted to convey that there are so many types and configurations of families, you can never assume anything.

Tell us something interesting that is not in the blurb?

There is a side plot about teen bullying. It’s not really depicted in the book, in case that’s a trigger for some, but we have some teens dealing with the aftermath. I was given permission to use Paul Richmond’s You Will Rise Project as an outlet for the kids to talk about bullying and self-expression.

Will there be another book(s) in the Coming About series?

I honestly don’t know. I’d always intended to end it with Rory, and no one is begging me  for a story right at the moment, but who knows?

Since there is always another story to tell, what are you working on now?

I’m working on a standalone, kind of a dark romance, about two men who meet in a mental institution—I know, but I promise the circumstances aren’t as creepy as you might imagine. That should be wrapped up soon, and I’ll start working on the sequel to my thriller, Shadows Fall.

If you could meet any writer, alive or dead, who would it be and why?

Oh gosh, there are so many choices. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting a lot of my favorite writers. I’ll go back to my roots then and say Michael Crichton or Peter Benchley. I cut my teeth on books like Congo and Jaws.

Besides reading and writing, what else do you enjoy?

Most of my free time is taken up by my son, and I love spending time with him. I also enjoy doing outdoor things when I can, like camping, hiking, rafting, or skiing. J

The last question is all yours. Tell the readers anything you like about you, your works, things you like. Anything at all.

All I can really say is thank you for all the support. The wonder of having people choose to read my books really never wears off. Every time someone seeks me out to tell me how much they liked one of my stories is just icing on the cake. I write for myself but I write for you guys too!

Also, one more thing… I chose not to include an epilogue with this story, because it just felt so final when I finished that last chapter. But I know that people wonder what happens to the characters after “the end.” So I’ve decided to write a follow-up short to be available on my website. Look for it sometime shortly after GRL (October 14-18) if you’re interested in more Rory & Bennett, plus Jessie, Addison, and the rest of the Coming About gang!

Blurb:

UnbreakBroken_Final

Rory Donovan’s life is a hot mess. His marriage is failing and he’s in intensive psychotherapy, working through the unfortunate side effects of memories from a childhood trauma. The only thing good in his life right now is his job—teaching photography to gifted high school students.

Harbor Patrol officer Bennett Foster is co-parenting his teenage daughter with his high school best friend Jessie. When he meets Addison’s teacher and realizes they’ve met before, he can’t get the sexy stranger out of his head.

Striking up a sexual-tension-filled friendship, together they must help an angsty teenager deal with a dying friend. Bennett must keep his little family from falling apart while Rory struggles to come to terms with his new reality. Somewhere along the way, most unexpectedly…love happens.

Series: Coming About–Book Three

(True series: Should be read in order)

Release Date: September 16, 2015

Excerpt:

Dr. Conlan treated me to a rare fond smile, almost motherly in its warmth. “I’m pleased to see you happier than you have been.”

I grinned back, but then my brow furrowed. “Does this make me gay?”

“Does that matter?”

“I don’t know. Should it?”

“I’ll never understand the fascination with labeling things that our society seems to have. To me, sexuality is as intangible as the universe. There’s no way to truly know what’s out there, and how it all relates to everything else.

“As humans, we seek to know, to understand, and somehow we feel that putting things in boxes and labeling helps us do that. But some things are fluid, changing and developing with the tide of the evolution of life. Do me a favor, Rory. Don’t put yourself in a box.”

I was dumbfounded, stunned speechless. I knew I’d remember Dr. Conlan’s words for the rest of my life, and I would try to stay as true to them as I could. “I won’t,” I whispered.
